Happy Spring!
Saturday, June 17th – The Greatest Artist You Never Knew
Saturday, June 24th – CSA Spring Harvest
Farm Tour (can make your reservations NOW 😊!)
Sunday, June 28th – CSA Culinary
Extravaganza (local edition)
- What you need to know
- CSA Member’s father’s
celebration and memorial event THIS Saturday!
- Click activism –
sometimes it doesn’t take a lot to make a difference
- Food safety and
COVID-19…
- Still have that Sorrel
in your fridge? Here’s an idea from CSA Member Caryn Meirs…
- What you actually got
last week
- Why eat organic? Check
this out…
- Nutritionists say we
should all be eating more of these…
- And now, for something
completely different…
1.What you need to know (will be either new info to first time CSA members, or reminders/old hat to returning CSA members)…
- Bring at least TWO bags
to the CSA EVERY WEEK for wet and dry food items (and never
the twain should meet)
- When packing up your CSA
food, start at the left side of the long table and work your way to the
right and out the garden door. Why? We set out the food to be packed in
that order so the heaviest food items will be on the bottom of your bag,
and your food won’t get squished (another way to make your food go bad
faster), and if you separate the wet from the dry foods you’re doing
pretty good on having your food last longer! 😊
- When you get your food
home, if it’s in a plastic bag take it OUT of the plastic bag and store
elsewhere…even if it’s in another plastic bag (the original bag will be
too wet and your food won’t be happy there for long)
- Plan on using your food
in the order of how long it will reasonably stay fresh. Not sure as to
what that is? Just ask! 😊
Before you leave the house…BRING BAGS
to pack up your food (CSA members are responsible for packing up their own
shares) – canvas/plastic/paper…bring whatever suits your fancy. The CSA does
NOT provide bags for CSA members.
Time – 3:30pm to 7:30pm
Place – Sky Room Café in the Cinema Arts
Centre at 423 Park Ave, Huntington
Parking – park in the all the way around at
the back of the building by the day care center (you’ll see a fenced in
playground area with a sandbox)
When you arrive at the CSA –
- Check in at the sign-in desk with our friendly CSA
worker
- Read the Wall Chart that tells us every week what we’re
getting, how much we’re getting, and what the farm charged us for it…some
weeks it’s take one of everything but…SOME WEEKS IT’S NOT!!! So you have
to make sure you read the Wall Chart every week, and not assume anything.
You can also ask your fellow CSA members that are working that day what
the story is for the day (they should have name tags on).
Before you leave the CSA – Make sure you have
everything on the list (like the story of the 3 bears…not too much, not too
little, but just right 😊)! If you get to talking
with people, have kids with you, etc., it can be easy to be distracted and if
you get home and find out you don’t have everything that was on the list,
you’re out of luck because at 7:31pm the food is donated to a local food
organization (Community Solidarity…read more about them in the CSA Events email
under Tuesdays) that’s waiting to pick it up and get on their way.
Interesting piece about spring greens (out of the 14 listed,
we get 12 of them with our CSA…watercress nutritionally and botanically similar
to Curly Cress/Peppercress) and detoxing…
http://www.nourishingmeals.com/2012/03/detox-with-spring-greens.html
June 15, 2023
- Garlic Scapes – 1 bunch
- Peas, Shelling – 1 bag
- Mustard Greens – 1 bunch
- Lettuce – 1 head
- Lavendar – 1 bunch (and yes…it’s edible 😊!)

- Face coverings are
optional
- Hand washing upon
entering the theater is STRONGLY recommended (it’s always a good idea in
preventing COVID as well as the flu and colds)
Why COVID HATES soap (works better than hand sanitizer or
gloves), and we’re talking plain soap, NOT antibacterial soap (the use of which
causes antibiotic resistance which could kill us all ☹)…
https://healthmatters.nyp.org/how-does-handwashing-with-soap-kill-the-coronavirus/
- We will try and keep the
CSA area relatively uncrowded
- Enter near the Box
Office entrance, and exit thru the door that leads out to the Cinema
garden and upper parking lot stairs
1 bunch Sorrel washed and deveined (should make one very packed cup)
3/4 cup Dill
1/2 cup Walnuts lightly toasted
3 cloves Garlic (more or less to taste)
nice grinds of Pepper (and Salt if you do salt)
juice from one small Lemon
Olive Oil (at least 1/4 cup)
*Combine in a blender or food processor.
* I emulsify with water - pasta water is great for this -
but if you do not, you will definitely need more olive oil
June 8, 2023
- Asparagus – 1 bag (1/2 lb.) - $5.00
- Lettuce: Salad Bowl, Green – 1 head - $4.00
- Sorrel – 1 bunch - $4.50
- Oregano – 1 bunch - $4.50
- Tarragon, French* – 1 bunch - $5.00
Total Items: 5
Total Amount: $23.00
We pay our farm $22 per week for our CSA share…some weeks we
get a bit more, some a bit less. This week, it was $1.00 over $22.00. Doesn’t
sound like a whole lot, but it adds up over the course of the CSA season. We
seem to always get at least one CSA share’s worth of food every year that we
didn’t pay for…some years two, and last year it was almost four weeks worth extra,
so we’re talking almost $80 worth of food we got gratis…it’s all good! 😊

7.Why eat organic? Check this out…
https://www.thecooldown.com/green-business/epa-pesticides-decision-controversy/
Money talks louder than words so if you buy organic, the
powers that be want in on that green stuff (money, not Kale 😊)
and will up the supply to meet the demand. Of course, then groups like NOFA-NY
have to keep watch to make sure the federal government doesn’t lower the
organic standards, but they’re up to the task as they’ve been doing this for
years (I’m a member and you can be too if you check out https://nofany.org/ ).
Why don’t we get them more often? Because we’re getting them
locally grown when they’re in season, which is the best time to be eating them 😊!

Since food has been an integral part of Juneteenth
celebrations since it first began in 1866, it’s natural that 28 Black-owned
food businesses would get together to celebrate this occasion serving
everything from African American fare traditional to the holiday, as well as flavors
form Africa and the Caribbean. It’s taking place at the site of what was once
one of the largest free Black communities in pre-Civil War America.

Green Thumb CSA Spring Harvest Farm Tour
Green Thumb Farm
Water Mill
To RSVP:
Leave the time you want to take the tour, your name (if
you’re sharing a CSA Share leave the name of the CSA Member), and the number of
people in your party by emailing or phoning…
Email gtcsahuntington@gmail.com
Phone: 631-421-4864 (land line…no text option…no caller
ID…can leave voice messages 24/7)
This is a walking farm tour…rain or shine (unless we’re
talking torrential downpours) for CSA Members and their immediate family
members only (if you’re sharing a CSA Share usually one person goes in June and
the other in October)!
CSA Members who go on the farm tour will get a 10% discount
on EVERYTHING they buy at the Green Thumb Farm farm stand (food, non-perishables,
organically grown plants for your garden, flowers, Green Thumb Farm swag like
t-shirts/hats/sweatshirts for adults to toddlers)!
This Saturday is one of the two times of the year we CSA
members (and immediate family only) get the opportunity to take a behind the
scenes tour of our CSA farm (our farm – Green Thumb Farm - doesn’t do
farm tours for the general public), and get to meet our farmers and their
family (some will be working at the farm stand), get to see where our food is
growing, and hang out in the fields to pick what’s in season. If you have any
questions about your home kitchen garden, these are the people to ask. There
may be other CSA members joining us from Brookhaven Labs, the CSA at Green
Thumb Farm, and Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, as well.
I’m planning on going to lunch after the last tour at Barrow
Food House in Riverhead (farm-to-table and reasonably priced for the area) and
everyone’s invited (they have indoor and outdoor dining options). Check out the
menu and their story (but the website doesn’t mention that they have a full bar
with cocktails and local Beer/Wine in addition to non-alcoholic beverages like
in-house made Lemonade & Ice Tea)…
If you want breakfast/brunch before or after your farm tour,
right next door to the Green Thumb Farm farm stand is the Hampton Coffee
Company… https://hamptoncoffeecompany.com/pages/water-mill
. Some of our CSA members have gone here and liked it. Barrow Food House
doesn’t open till 11:30am.

Unfortunately, the website doesn’t have info yet about what

usually attends. The winter NOFA conferences are more for farmers, who (for the
most part) aren’t working at that point in time.
