Happy Autumn!
PLEASE READ – If you want/need to get any
messages to the CSA during CSA hours on Thursday PUHLEEZ 😊
insist the Box Office staff transfers the call to the Café. Tell them you NEED
to speak to someone in the CSA. The other week a CSA Member left a message at
the box office, and what should have been a simple box office pickup ended up
being more complicated than either party (CSA Member and me) wanted. I’m sorry
if it might not be in your comfort zone to be so insistent, but it seems that’s
what might be needed to get the job done 😊. Will also try and make
sure that every week someone from the Cinema staff will remind the Box Office
folks to do so. It’s not my place to give Cinema staff instructions, so it’s
not as if I can do this.
FUN THING…If any CSA members have any events
they’re participating in/organizing/etc. you get the idea 😊,
and would like your fellow CSA member so attend or participate, please let me
know and will try and get it in our CSA Events emails (I say “try” because I
don’t always have the time to do so or I might forget, but will make a good
faith effort to make that happen…and I can be reminded 😊).
CSA weather report…
Cool (mid 60s to late 50s)
Do NOT leave your CSA Shares in your car! They will
not be happy, and neither will you when your food doesn’t last as long as it
could. Over 40 degrees in your car and your CSA Share’s not happy (and inside
your car with closed windows it’s probably hotter than you’d think… and it is –
check this out… https://abc7news.com/how-hot-can-it-get-inside-a-car-baby-in-gets/2266627/#:~:text=Here's%20a%20look%20at%20just%20how%20hot%20it%20can%20get%3A&text=When%20it's%2080%20degrees%20outside,and%20119%20after%2030%20minutes
)
***Important…if you ever send anyone to the
CSA to pick up food for you, please tell them to BRING BAGS (and make
sure at least one of them is plastic for the wet foods so you don’t get the dry
ones wet which would not be a good thing…will make the foods that don’t want to
be wet rot faster)!

Fall Farm Tour coming up and news from the farm

Island!

Save Our Cinema (to insure we have a home till December 10th of
this year AND for next year)

- And now, for something completely different…
*Anything in any of our CSA emails not directly related to
the functioning of the CSA, feel free to take or leave at your discretion, and
anything related to health issues always consult with your physician(s) before
taking any action.
1.What you need to know (will be either new info to
first time CSA members, or reminders/old hat to returning CSA members)…
Most immediate helpful hints…
- Bring at least TWO bags to the CSA EVERY WEEK
for wet and dry food items (and never the twain should meet)
- When packing up your CSA food, start at the left side
of the long table and work your way to the right and out the garden door.
Why? We set out the food to be packed in that order so the heaviest food
items will be on the bottom of your bag, and your food won’t get squished
(another way to make your food go bad faster), and if you separate the wet
from the dry foods you’re doing pretty good on having your food last
longer! 😊
- When you get your food home, if it’s in a plastic bag
take it OUT of the plastic bag and store elsewhere…even if it’s in another
plastic bag (the original bag will be wet and your food won’t be happy
there for long)
- Plan on using your food in the order of how long it
will reasonably stay fresh.
Before you leave the house…BRING BAGS
to pack up your food (CSA members are responsible for packing up their own
shares) – canvas/plastic/paper…bring whatever suits your fancy. The CSA does
NOT provide bags for CSA members. Consider stashing wet and dry bags in every
vehicle you own or might end up driving (or someone would use to pick up for
you) and stash them in the glove compartment, hatch, trunk…whatever 😊
so you never have to end up not having anything to pack your CSA Share in.
Time – 3:30pm to 7:30pm
Place – Sky Room Café in the Cinema Arts
Centre at 423 Park Ave, Huntington
Parking – park in the all the way around at
the back of the building by the day care center (you’ll see a fenced in
playground area with a sandbox)
When you arrive at the CSA –
- Check in at the sign-in desk with our friendly CSA
worker
- Read the Wall Chart that tells us every week what we’re
getting, how much we’re getting, and what the farm charged us for it…some
weeks it’s take one of everything but…SOME WEEKS IT’S NOT!!! So you have
to make sure you read the Wall Chart every week, and not assume anything.
You can also ask your fellow CSA members that are working that day what
the story is for the day (they should have name tags on).
Before you leave the CSA – Make sure you have
everything on the list (like the story of the 3 bears…not too much, not too
little, but just right 😊)! If you get to talking
with people, have kids with you, etc., it can be easy to be distracted and if
you get home and find out you don’t have everything that was on the list,
you’re out of luck because at 7:31pm the food is donated to a local food organization
(Community Solidarity…read more about them in the CSA Events email under
Tuesdays) that’s waiting to pick it up and get on their way.
CSA words to live by…when trying any new food you’ve
never eaten before…START SLOW!!! Read up about it (make sure it doesn’t
interfere with any medications you might be taking or any health conditions you
might have), see what traditional/conventional ways it’s prepared (cultures
that have been eating certain foods for many years basically have a good idea
what they’re doing, and we can learn from that), try a small portion, see how
your body/digestive system reacts, and proceed from there. Then try preparing
in different ways and see what you come up with, and feel free to ask for suggestion/info/recommendations!
Paraphrased wise words by a nutritionist that I read (and
don’t remember where I read it or who said it), BUT it’s pretty smart info
regarding eating seasonally in our part of the globe…
Spring… is all about detoxing (what we get
from the CSA at this time is a lot of green things that are really good to help
clean us out from whatever we accumulated during the winter)
Interesting piece about spring greens (out of the 14 listed,
we get 12 of them with our CSA…watercress nutritionally and botanically similar
to Curly Cress/Peppercress) and detoxing…
http://www.nourishingmeals.com/2012/03/detox-with-spring-greens.html
Summer is all about being hydrated (the
popular summer foods are all full of water…Tomatoes, Lettuces, Summer Squashes,
etc.)
Fall/winter is all about storing energy (we
get all the dense vegetables…Sweet Potatoes, Winter Squashes, etc…. that are
energy powerhouses to fuel us through the winter) to get you through the winter
to make it to…Spring!
Week #21

4. Lettuce: Escarole – 1 head
5. Pak Choi – 1 bunch

Herb Share – October 2B
Mint AND Sage, Pineapple
*More Turnip suggestions, health info and inspiration!
If you want to have Turnips work for you as an anti-cancer
veg…DO NOT MICROWAVE THEM for cooking OR to heat them up. Why? Only SIXTY
SECONDS (and possibly less) in a microwave will turn ANY cruciferous vegetable
(and Turnips are one of many 😊) from an anti-cancer
powerhouse to…you might as well be eating a stick ☹,
and sticks aren’t anti-cancer things to chew on 😊. You can read about why
no microwaving for cruciferous veg here…

3. CSA Fall Farm Tour coming up and news from the farm
Since Green Thumb Farm’s Winter Squashes have bit the dust
due to too much rain from August on, someone asked about Sweet Potatoes. Click
on the attachment in this email to see about 6,500 lbs. of Sweet Potatoes that
were harvested and are now curing so they can be brought in to us!
Someone else asked about Jerusalem Artichokes (also called
Sunchokes) and the answer is yes, we should be getting them as they are about
to be harvested.
Lastly, there was a question I asked about it was about our
Lettuces for the past few weeks that have been on the small side (not including
last week which looked more normal), and the answer was that they’d been
growing slower than usual and then bolting earlier. And our farmers can’t
figure out why they were bolting as it wasn’t hot enough for them to do that
when they bolted. Go figure!
If you have any questions for our farmers about our CSA food
OR your own home gardens, make sure to come to our CSA Farm Tour!
Saturday, October 24th
11am to noon OR noon to 1pm
Green Thumb CSA Annual Fall Harvest Farm Tour
Green Thumb Farm
829 Montauk Hwy
Water Mill
RSVP by responding to this email or leaving a phone
message at 631-421-4864, and tell us your name and the total number of
people coming with you (there’s only so much room in the wagon), and which tour
time you’d like to attend. if you are sharing with someone, you need to use
BOTH your name and the name of the CSA member you’re sharing with.
The CSA farm tour is for CSA Members and their immediate
family members only. Family friendly event…kids welcome! 😊
If you have any questions about any of the food you’ve
gotten at our CSA, or about Green Thumb Farm and its farmers, OR any questions
about your home vegetable garden, this is the time and place to ask! 😊
This will be a riding tour on a large tractor-pulled wagon
(kids love this 😊). We’ll see various
parts of the farm and probably get to feed some animals, maybe get to pick some
food from the fields, and get Pumpkins at the end (not necessarily organic and
not necessarily from our farm, BUT meant more for decorating though they can be
eaten 😊). This is a rain or shine event. I’ve gone
in the rain and have had just as much fun as when it wasn’t 😊.
However, if we’re talking torrential downpours or a hurricane, it would be
cancelled.
Everything purchased at the farm stand for those attending
the farm tour will get a 10% discount.
After the last farm tour, some of us will go to Barrow Food
House in Aquebogue for lunch and of course, you’re welcome to come along. Check
out the menu for Barrow Food House…
The only thing I didn’t care for on the menu (and have eaten
most of it 😊) was the Latkes (thought they were too
greasy), but it’s been a while so I might try them again to see if they’ve
gotten any better 😊.
4. No more drought for Huntington, but not for all of
Long Island!
Believe it or not, the east end of Long Island (from East
Moriches to Montauk) is STILL in Level 1 drought…meaning it’s still abnormally
dry.
5.Click activism…sometimes it only takes a click to help
change the world!
A.Here’s a petition I came across to move the location of
the Northport Farmer’s Market (not to get rid of it 😊)
and I thought they made some valid points so I signed it…
B.Join me in Telling State Legislators to Ban Atrazine! Syngenta!
ChemChina is the world's number one pesticide seller. Its top product is
atrazine, the second most widely used herbicide in the United States (after
glyphosate) and the pesticide most often found in tap water. Atrazine disrupts
the endocrine system which regulates reproductive hormones, the brain and the
nervous system, as well as metabolism and blood sugar. That’s why atrazine can
cause a range of health problems including, horrific birth defects, estrogen-dependent
breast cancer, PCOS, obesity, and neurodegenerative disease.
https://advocacy.organicconsumers.org/page/103750/action/1?chain
C.Join Me in Telling the FDA to Close the Loophole That Lets Frankenfoods
Escape Safety Testing! The Food & Drug Administration has proposed a rule
that would require food companies to give them notice when they intend to avoid
safety testing a new ingredient by moving it through a loophole the FDA created
known as “Generally Recognized as Safe” (GRAS). Closing the loophole would mean
FDA regulators would conduct risk analyses assessing exposure, toxicology, and
expected consumption patterns to determine whether an ingredient is safe for
its intended use—before we eat it.
https://advocacy.organicconsumers.org/page/101709/petition/1?chain
D.No secret ingredients in our food! This petition is
similar to the one above but it’s from a different group. We need the FDA to
not allow manufacturers to include ingredients in food that they don’t have to
tell us what it is! These are ingredients the government as decided are GRAS
(generally recognized as safe) and these ingredients are determined to be
“safe” from the makers of these ingredients submitting research done by THEIR
scientists (even hear of the expression “the fox guarding the hen house”? this
is an example of that). So, sign here if you’d like to know what’s in the food
you’re eating (BTW – certified organic foods don’t use GRAS ingredients created
by industry scientists)…
https://nation.centerforfoodsafety.org/gras-oct26?recruiter_id=659747
6.Food safety and COVID, and colds and the flu, food
poisoning and even cyclosporiasis…
Even though it’s been a while since the word “pandemic” has
been bandied about, people are still getting COVID and other illnesses. And the
lessons we learned during the past few years can still come in handy today to
avoid basic things like colds and the flu, food poisoning, and even
cyclosporiasis.
Watch writer J. Kenji Lopez-Alt (son of a Harvard University
geneticist and immunologist, grandson of a chemist, and author of Food Lab:
Better Home Cooking Through Science), talk about COVID-19 and food safety…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkvw9lZ3v3I
And read in more detail here…
After keeping the CSA going thru 2020 and 2021 while the
Cinema Arts Centre was closed (with everyone staying healthy using the simple
practices of wearing face coverings, hand washing, and social distancing), this
is where we are now at this moment in time…
- Face coverings are optional
- Hand washing upon entering the theater is recommended (it’s always a good
idea in preventing COVID as well as the flu and colds)
Why COVID HATES soap (works better than hand sanitizer or
gloves), and we’re talking plain soap, NOT antibacterial soap (the use of which
causes antibiotic resistance which could kill us all ☹)…
https://healthmatters.nyp.org/how-does-handwashing-with-soap-kill-the-coronavirus/
- Will try and keep the CSA area relatively uncrowded if
any future outbreaks of any infectious diseases occur
- Enter near the Box Office entrance, and exit thru the
door that leads out to the Cinema garden and upper parking lot stairs
7. Thanksgiving is coming up – Organic Krush can
help you have an organic holiday meal!
Starting Monday, October 26th, you can place an
order with Organic Krush in Woodbury to either add to, or completely cater,
your Thanksgiving this year. They’ll have Turkeys and side dishes (ready to
heat and serve for yourself and/or your guests), and desserts for your dining
pleasure. Their food is organic, sustainably sourced (when not organic), plant
forward (though they have Turkey, Chicken, Beef and Fish options), and can be
gluten-free as well. Here's the link for their catering department (the
Thanksgiving options won’t be up till 10/26)…
https://organickrush.com/ok-catering/
Here’s a story from one of the Organic Krush co-owners,
Michelle, as to how she became a fan of healthy eating…

8. How best to contact the CSA/suzanne
First thing you might think is…I don’t need or want this
info.
I get that BUT, there might come a time when you wish you
knew…for example…
- Something’s come up at the last minute and you know
you’re going to be running late and would like to have your CSA Share
packed and waiting for you at the Cinema Box Office to pick it up before
the theater closes
- You’re scheduled to help out at the CSA and something
comes up at the last minute and you need to cancel
- Something comes up and you can’t make it to the CSA at
all and you’d like to see if someone can take your CSA Share and hold on
to it till you could pick it up from them
You get the idea 😊.
I am not a 24/7 connected person, have no desire to be, and
try and keep my CSA and personal communications separate, so…
- Phone…you can leave a message on my landline (yes, they
do still exist 😊) at 631-421-4864 at any
time 24/7 (keep the ringer off when sleeping), BUT on Thursdays if you
leave a message it needs to be before noon otherwise I won’t hear it till
I get back from the CSA Thursday night
- Email – you can email 24/7 at gtCSAhuntington@gmail.com but
again, if you email after noon on Thursday, I won’t get it till I get back
from the CSA Thursday night
- On Thursdays I am totally incommunicado from noon to
3:30pm so if you want to get in touch with me between those times, the
best option is to make sure you call or email me before noon OR wait till
after 3:30pm and call the Cinema Box Office at 631-423-7611 xt. 0 to reach
me up till 7:30pm
- On Thursdays after 3:30pm (and up to 8pm), call the Box
Office at the Cinema Arts Centre at 631-423-7611 xt. 0 and ask to speak to
someone at the CSA and they will connect the call to the Café, and we’ll
talk to you directly. It’s not the Cinema staff’s job to take messages for
the CSA, and THEY MIGHT NOT GET IT RIGHT! If you leave a message with
someone at the Box Office, we might not get it in a timely manner or at
all, and they may not get it right (which happened recently and someone
almost didn’t get their CSA Share because of it). Unfortunately, if you’re
calling around 7:30pm, it may be a time where the Box Office is busy
selling tickets, and they either might not pick up the phone, or pick up
the phone and put you on hold. If they don’t pick up the phone, keep
calling, and they should eventually pick up and be able to speak with you.
We are at the CSA cleaning up till about 8pm so you should be able to
catch us before we leave (though if we are ready to leave earlier, we
will).
- FYI – I don’t get emails on my phone at all, and CSA
members aren’t able to text me as I don’t deal with CSA issues on my cell
phone
Consider putting the two phone numbers (suzanne –
631-421-4864 and the Cinema 631-423-7611 xt. 0) in your phone under “CSA” or
“Green Thumb CSA – Huntington” (or whatever works for you to remember where you
put them 😊) and you can put in the notes the details of
when to call, what days to call, etc.
9. Interested in either having a vegan Thanksgiving this
year, OR just learning to cook some delicious vegan dishes?
And it’s FREE! Though for $28 you can get video versions of
all of the recipes in case you’re more of a visual learner
Starting Sunday, November 1st, join Chef Adam
Sobel for 20 days of vegan recipes leading up to either a delicious
Thanksgiving meal OR just some tasty dishes to add to your meal time
repertoire. PLUS, there’ll be a LIVE cooking class held on Sunday, November 22nd
at 4pm where you can cook along with Chef Adam (available on replay if you
can’t make it for the live class). Chef Adam is very entertaining and very
knowledgeable and his live classes are a lot of fun and you WILL learn a lot.
Sign up here…
10.Emergency situations at the CSA (hurricanes/electronic
communication glitches/medical emergencies…on my part, etc.)
- It’s hurricane season from June 1st till November 30th
(our CSA’s last day is December 10th)! Farmers are more
hardcore than postal workers so your food will be at the CSA between
3:30pm and 7:30pm on Thursdays, pretty much no matter what. Hurricane
Sandy didn’t stop our CSA. We were at the Unitarian Fellowship in
Huntington, and there was no power and there were tree limbs around the
property BUT I checked out the building to make sure there was no danger
for us being in the building or entering the property, and with
flashlights brought by me, we had our CSA. If there’s no emails…show up anyway.
If there’s some problem/issue with the food arriving there should be a
note on the door of the Cinema letting you know what’s up (if we’re not
already in there waiting for you). In a storm situation please bring a
flashlight/lantern as it could be helpful for you and those of us at the
CSA. Again…show up, and at 3:30pm and 5:30pm if there were no emails
please offer to work if you’re able and available. If you feel it’s not
safe/wise for you to venture out, know that any food left at the end of
the CSA will be picked up and donated to the gang at Community Solidarity.
They have NEVER missed a food distribution day even in snow and ice storms
(regardless of the weather…hungry people will still be hungry if there’s
no food to eat).
- Electronic communication is FAR from perfect. IF you
get no CSA emails or responses to your emails on any given week…come to
the CSA anyway. It could be a problem with my laptop, etc. Stuff happens.
- Anything else that might come up (these days…who
knows???)…no emails, etc., come anyway and will do our best to keep
everyone informed as best we can (look for notes on front door of Cinema
if nothing else). The CSA has always happened every week during our 20+
seasons…(lifted from the postal worker motto) - Neither snow nor rain nor
heat nor gloom stays these farmers & CSA crew from the swift
completion of their appointed rounds…to get you your CSA Shares! 😊
- If there’s an emergency situation in progress, consider
offering to help out at the CSA whether you’re asked to or not.
11. Other ways to support our CSA by supporting the group
Save Our Cinema (to insure we have a home till December 10th of this
year AND for next year)
BTW 😊, the first Cinema in
Exile event of the silent film Faust, playing with a live band (at the South
Bay Movie Theater in Bay Shore), was a total success with about 100 people
coming down to the south shore. So the band and the theater owner were very
happy, and are open to having more Cinema in Exile events at this location 😊!
- Next
fun event coming up from the team of Cinema in Exile is happening…
Saturday, October 31st
1:30pm to 4pm
Dylan Skolnick and Cinema in Exile
present…Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein
Half Hollow Hills Community Library
55 Vanderbilt Pkwy
Dix Hills
FREE
For more info…
https://www.hhhlibrary.org/event/halloween-film-showing-abbot-and-costello-meet-frankenstein-170909
631-421-4530
This screening includes a special
interview with Lou Costello’s daughter, Chris, sharing memories of her dad and
this uproarious film! This is not a library sponsored event.
The library listing says
“Reservation” but not sure if it’s because Cinema in Exile “reserved” the space
for the event OR you need to make a reservation because this is going to fill
up and be “sold out”. I’m going to give the library a call and see what the
story is.
- If
you’re not on the email list, or you’re not getting any emails, sign up
for updates on the website Save Our Cinema for Cinema in Exile pop-up
events, and updated news, and action steps here… https://www.saveourcinema.org/
- We’re
still looking for people who will sign this petition to reinstate Dylan
Skolnick as Co-Director of the Cinema Arts Centre. So if you know of
anyone you’d forward this info to, or social media place you’d post it,
here’s the link (we’re up to 3,227 signatures and hoping to reach 4,000)…
https://sign.moveon.org/petitions/reinstate-dylan-skolnick-immidately
- Have
you read these two recent articles? If not, they’re VERY well written and
very detailed (both written by Claude Solnik…sounds pretty close to
Skolnick, but not a relative, and no cigar as the old saying goes 😊)…
- There’s a Go Fund Me page for Dylan Skolnick. Right now he/we
have no health insurance and Dylan’s income has been reduced by 85% (he’s
the sole breadwinner in our family) and here’s a bit about why the Save
Our Cinema group started this… It's about what happens to a person when, after decades
devoted to one institution, a paycheck suddenly stops. It's about a
mortgage, groceries, insurance, bills, you know- everyday expenses.
Professional and legal costs can arise when a longtime employment ends
unexpectedly. And it's about giving Dylan something enormously valuable
right now: time. Time to deal with what has happened. Time to protect
himself and his interests. Time to determine what comes next, and time to
do those things without the immediate financial pressure caused by sudden
loss of a longtime job…
12.What you actually got last week!
Week #20
October 15, 2026
1. Broccoli – 1 bunch - $5.50
2. Radishes: French Breakfast – 1 bunch - $4.75
3. Beans, Shelling: Cranberry – 1 bag (3/4 lb.) - $5.50
4. Tat Soi – 1 bunch - $4.50
5. Lettuce Lolla Rosa – 1 head - $4.50
Total Items: 5
Total Amount: $24.75
We pay our farm $23 per week for our CSA share…some weeks we
get a bit more, some a bit less. This week, it was $1.75 over $23.00. I keep
track and it adds up over the course of our CSA season and so far the total is
$79.25 ($92 will make it 4 CSA Shares). We seem to always get at least one CSA
share’s worth of food every year that we didn’t pay for (we’re now on our way
to getting FOUR weeks’ worth of extra food 😊)…some years two. Last
year it was five and a half weeks’ worth extra, so we’re talking $119 worth of
food we got gratis. No idea what it might be this season but in the end…it’s
all good! 😊

Community Solidarity (formerly Long Island Food Not Bombs)
is an amazing group, doing much needed good works. These are the folks our CSA
donates food to (and have for the last several years). If you’d like to
volunteer, make a donation (they REALLY, REALLY need a new truck), or have need
of their services (or know people who might)…get in touch/get information via
their website (listed above).
They also need/accept donations of the following…Bicycles,
Books, Clothing, Flowers (good for general mental health…taking care of the
mind AND the body), Food, Medical Care (is there a Doctor or Dentist in the
house? 😊), Plants/Seedlings, School Supplies, Toys
and more. For details on donating items, please go to the Home Page, scroll to
Donate, and read the appropriate listing (and scroll to Material Goods to see
the topics not initially listed)…

Costello’s daughter, Chris, sharing memories of her dad and this uproarious

The library listing says “Reservation” but not sure if it’s
because Cinema in Exile “reserved” the space for the event OR you need to make
a reservation because this is going to fill up and be “sold out”. I’m going to
give the library a call and see what the story is.

This group doesn’t have a newsletter that you can subscribe to so I’d say to check the website starting in January to check for updates, and I will email info as I find out too. Healthy food needs a healthy planet and this group seems to be doing good work in that respect.
