Happy Summer!
CSA Mystery (a two parter)!
1.Did anyone by chance take an extra bag of Potatoes last
week (it was 1 bag per CSA share)? It appears we were short one bag by the end
of the night (itâs possible the count was off but not likely, as they were
counted twice by two different people). Please get in touch if you can help
solve this mystery. I know one person almost took two bags of Potatoes because
they thought each box of Potatoes on the counter contained two different things
but we caught that error before the person left (someone picking up for a CSA
member).
Please be mindful when picking up your CSA Share, take your
time, read the CSA Wall Chart and ask if you have any questions, and if anyone
is picking up for you please emphasize the importance of taking the correct
amount of food (like the old story about Goldilocks and the 3 Bears â not too
little, not too much but just right đ ). If someone takes too
much (even if itâs by accident) it means another CSA member doesnât get the
food they paid for, as the farm is not responsible for missing CSA food if they
gave us the correct amount to begin with (if itâs on their endâŠwhich has
happened on rare occasionsâŠthey will make up for their error).
2.Who didnât get their Flower Share? At the end of the night
there was a bunch of Flower left, even though everyone who had a Flower Share
showed up! They were counted too, so there was the exact number. If it was you,
please let us know how it happened so we can perhaps try and help it not happen
again. Thanks! đ
VERY IMPORTANTâŠwhen using Cinema bathrooms,
please make sure to flush the toilets and hold down the lever to
make sure itâs a complete flush, or flush again if needed.
CSA Weather ReportâŠwarm and possible
thunderstorms (see below).
IF itâs raining/thundering and we need to line up
outside (hasnât happened yet but it could)âŠthe deal is 3 people units
(individuals/couples/families) in the CSA at a time, 3 people units in the
theater lined up and socially distanced in the lobby, and everyone else lined
up in their cars (will have a car parked where yâall should be parking behind).
If you poke your head in the theater, our CSA âhall monitorâ đ
will let you know whatâs what.
ImportantâŠif you send anyone to the CSA to
pick up food for you, please tell them to BRING BAGS!
This email includesâŠ
- What you need to know
- Itâs time to weigh our
CSA foodâŠplease read!!!
- Food safety info for
power outages and some suggestions about what to eat
- Another reason to eat
local, eat certified organic, eat seasonal
- If you havenât watched
this yet, itâs really worth checking outâŠFood safety and COVID-19
- Bulk Tomato Share starts
this weekâŠyou can still get in on it!
- What you actually got
last week
- And now, for something
completely differentâŠ
Anything in these emails not directly related to the
functioning of the CSA feel free to take or leave at your discretion, and
anything related to health issues always consult with your physician(s) before
taking any action.
1.What you need to know (will be either new info to
first time CSA members, or reminders/old hat to returning CSA members)âŠ
Before you leave the houseâŠBRING BAGS
to pack up your food (CSA members are responsible for packing up their own
shares) â canvas/plastic/paperâŠbring whatever suits your fancy. The CSA does
NOT provide bags for CSA members.
Time â 3:30pm to 7:30pm
Place â Sky Room CafĂ© in the Cinema Arts
Centre at 423 Park Ave, Huntington
Parking* â park in the all the way around at
the back of the building by the day care center (youâll see a fenced in
playground area with a sandbox)âŠ*except when itâs raining (read the CSA Weather
Report above)
When you arrive at the CSA â
- Check in at the desk with our friendly CSA worker
- Read the Wall Chart that tells us every week what weâre
getting, how much weâre getting, and what the farm charged us for itâŠsome
weeks itâs take one of everything but SOME WEEKS ITâS NOT!!! So you have
to make sure you read the Wall Chart every week, and not assume anything.
You can also ask your fellow CSA members that are working that day what
the story is for the day (they should have name tags on).
- When you enter the CSA area, start at Table #1 at the
left side of the table and work your way to the right, then to Table #2,
Table #3, Herb Share table (if you have one), Flower Share table (if you
have one), and then out the back door to the Cinema garden by the upper
parking lot stairs. Weâre arranging the food so if you only have one bag
with you and you follow this, the heaviest things are on the bottom of the
bag, the lightest are on the top, and the wettest things arenât going to
get the things that need to stay dry the most very wet. Plus, it makes
social distancing easier, and we have only one entrance and one exit being
used.
Before you leave the CSA â Make sure you have
everything on the list! If you get to talking with people, have kids with you,
etc., it can be easy to be distracted and if you get home and find out you
donât have everything that was on the list, youâre out of luck because at 7:31pm
the food is donated to a local food organization thatâs waiting to pick it up
and get on their way.
Veggie info sheets added as needed. This is the link to the: Veggie Info Sheets. Print out, put in a notebook and you end up with a cookbook at the end of the CSA season. Also there are good tips on storage, prep, and nutrition.
The listâŠthis is a general list and youâll be sent another
email within the next week with the detailed list after I get it (which isnât
till the day of the CSAâŠthe list is subject to change without notice because
farming is like that! đ However, most of the
time itâs accurate and if itâs notâŠusually only one food item will be changed)âŠ
CSA words to live byâŠwhen trying any new food youâve
never eaten beforeâŠSTART SLOW!!! Read up about it (make sure it doesnât
interfere with any medications you might be taking or any health conditions you
might have), see what traditional/conventional ways itâs prepared (cultures
that have been eating certain foods for many years basically have a good idea
what theyâre doing, and we can learn from that), try a small portion, see how
your body/digestive system reacts, and proceed from there. Then try preparing
in different ways and see what you come up with, and feel free to ask for
suggestion/info/recommendations!
Anything in these emails not directly related to the
functioning of the CSA feel free to take or leave at your discretion, and
anything related to health issues always consult with your physician(s) before
taking any action.
Paraphrased wise words by a nutritionist that I read (and
donât remember where I read it or who said it), BUT itâs pretty smart info
regarding eating seasonally in our part of the globeâŠ
Spring⊠is all about detoxing (what we get
from the CSA at this time is a lot of green things that are really good to help
clean us out from whatever we accumulated during the winter)
Interesting piece about spring greens (out of the 14 listed,
we get 12 of them with our CSAâŠwatercress nutritionally and botanically similar
to Curly Cress/Peppercress) and detoxingâŠ
http://www.nourishingmeals.com/2012/03/detox-with-spring-greens.html
Summer is all about being hydrated (the
popular summer foods are all full of waterâŠTomatoes, Lettuces, Summer Squashes,
etc.)
Fall/winter is all about storing energy (we
get all the dense vegetablesâŠSweet Potatoes, Winter Squashes, etcâŠ. that are
energy powerhouses to fuel us through the winter) to get you through the winter
to make it toâŠSpring!

2. Itâs
time to weigh our CSA foodâŠplease read!
- Please be aware that it may
take a little more time for you to collect your CSA share when weighing is
part of the experience, so plan accordingly.
- Check the CSA Wall Chart that
our farmer brings in every week before taking any food so you know what
youâre taking and how much to takeâŠassume nothing and please feel free to
ask questions!
- Bring your reading glasses or
ask someone to help if you canât see the numbers on the scale clearly.
- PLEASE DO
NOT GO OVER THE AMOUNT STATED on the Wall Chart.
Please
err on the under side of the weight postedâŠNEVER over. It may not seem like
much to you, but we have 55 CSA members this week, and if every person is over
by ONE OUNCE (for crying out loud! Itâs only an ounce!!!) âŠthat means weâll be
short about 3 1/2 POUNDS of produce and at least 2 CSA members (and one of them
could be you) wonât get the food they paid for.
3.Food safety info for power outages and some suggestion
about what to eatâŠ
Hopefully, you have power but still good for next time (and
at some point there will be a next time)âŠprint and keep on your fridge door or
somewhere youâll findâŠ
The #1 concept in this situations isâŠWhen in doubt â THROW
IT OUT! While Iâm all about not wasting food, not into food poisoningâŠSO not
worth it.

5.If you havenât watched this yes, itâs really worth
checking outâŠFood safety and COVID-19
One of our CSA members told me that after watching this, it
made them feel better about going grocery shopping.

6.Bulk Tomato Share starts this weekâŠyou can still get in
on it!
Starting this week for the next few weeks, our farmer will
be bringing in Bulk Tomato Shares for those whoâve already ordered BUT thereâs
still time to get in on it (last delivery date is September 10th).
The cost is $45 for 20 lbs. of certified organic Roma/Paste
Tomatoes from our farm, Green Thumb Organic Farm.
What are you going to do with all those Tomatoes? Youâll
appreciate them all winter long after youâve canned (as Tomato sauce or whole),
frozen or dehydrated them, rather than buying tasteless Tomatoes out of season
all winter long (or not eating any till theyâre in season again).
The easiest thing in the universe (the sort of recipe I say
that dead people can make đ ) is to freeze them
whole. Hereâs the instructionsâŠ

(We pay $20 per week for our CSA shareâŠsome weeks we get a
bit more, some a bit less. This week, itâs $.25 extra. Doesnât sound like a
lot, but it adds up over the course of the CSA season. Our total amount extra
that our farmers have given us so far is $10.50. We seem to always get at least
one CSA shareâs worth of food every year that we didnât pay forâŠsome years two,
and some between one and twoâŠitâs all good! đ)
