Happy Autumn!
CSA weather report…cool and rain starting about 5pm
THANKSGIVING ALERT!!! The week of
Thanksgiving, our CSA pickup day will be Wednesday, November 27th
(at the moment it will take place at same time…3:30pm to 7:30pm…BUT we may
start earlier…stay tuned for any time changes)
Important…if you call the Box Office to have a
bag packed for a late CSA pickup (by 10pm), do NOT leave messages at the Box
Office and expect the CSA to get them. It doesn’t always happen (it didn’t last
week…not good). You MUST speak directly to someone from the CSA. The call can
easily be transferred to the Sky Room Cafรฉ where someone from the CSA can take
the phone call (or if the CSA is outside or in another location, they can still
get a CSA member to come to the Box Office to take the call).
Also important…if you send anyone to the CSA
to pick up food, please tell them to BRING BAGS!
This email includes…
- What you need to know
- Foods that help fight
breast cancer
- Turkeys anyone?
- Click activism – you
don’t have to do much, or spend any money, to help make a positive change
in the world
- What you actually got
last week
- Information is power –
heavy metals in baby food…oh dear…
- Prizes!
- Turning back your life
clock 14 years!!!
- And now, for something
completely different
๐
Anything in these emails not directly related to the
functioning of the CSA feel free to take or leave at your discretion, and
anything related to health issues always consult with your physicians before
taking any action.
1.What you need to know (will be either new info to
first time CSA members, or reminders/old hat to returning CSA members)…
Before you leave the house…BRING BAGS
to pack up your food (CSA members are responsible for packing up their own
shares) – canvas/plastic/paper…bring whatever suits your fancy. The CSA does
NOT provide bags for CSA members.
Time – 3:30pm to 7:30pm
IF you need to pick up later than 7:30pm, call the Cinema
Arts Center Box Office between 3pm to 7:30pm at 631-423-7610 xt 0 and ask to
speak to someone from the CSA. We can pack a bag for you and leave it at the
Box Office but it MUST be picked up before the Box Office closes (call the Box
Office to check the time…lately it’s been 9:30pm). If not, it won’t be there on
Friday. And do not leave a message at the Box Office…YOU
MUST SPEAK TO SOMEONE FROM THE CSA (otherwise the CSA will not be
responsible if your food doesn’t get packed and left for you).
Place – Sky Room Cafรฉ in the Cinema Arts
Centre at 423 Park Ave, Huntington
Parking – park in the all the way around at
the back of the building by the day care center (you’ll see a fenced in
playground area with a sandbox)
When you arrive at the CSA –
- Check in at the desk with our friendly CSA worker
- Read the Wall Chart that tells us every week what we’re
getting, how much we’re getting, and what the farm charged us for it…some
weeks it’s take one of everything but SOME WEEKS IT’S NOT!!! So you have
to make sure you read the Wall Chart every week, and not assume anything.
You can also ask your fellow CSA members that are working that day what
the story is for the day (they should have name tags on).
Before you leave the CSA – Make sure you have
everything on the list! If you get to talking with people, have kids with you,
etc., it can be easy to be distracted and if you get home and find out you
don’t have everything that was on the list, you’re out of luck because at
7:31pm the food is donated to a local food organization that’s waiting to pick
it up and get on their way.
The list…this is a general list and you’ll be sent another
email within the next week with the detailed list after I get it (which isn’t
till the day of the CSA…the list is subject to change without notice because
farming is like that! J .
However, most of the time it’s accurate and if it’s not…usually only one food
item will be changed)…
CSA words to live by…when trying any new food that
you’ve never eaten before…START SLOW! Read up about it (make sure
it doesn’t interfere with any medications you might be taking or any health
conditions you might have), see what traditional/conventional ways it’s
prepared (cultures that have been eating certain foods for many years basically
have a good idea what they’re doing and we can learn from that), try a small
portion, see how your body/digestive system reacts, and proceed from there.
Then try preparing in different ways and see what you come up with, and feel
free to ask for suggestion/info/recommendations!
Paraphrased wise words by a nutritionist that I read and
don’t remember where I read it or who said it, BUT it’s pretty smart info
regarding eating seasonally in our part of the globe…
Spring… is all about detoxing (what we get
from the CSA at this time is a lot of green things that are really good to help
clean us out from whatever we accumulated during the winter)
Interesting piece about spring greens (out of the 14 listed,
we get 12 of them with our CSA…watercress nutritionally and botanically similar
to Peppercress) and detoxing…
Summer is all about being hydrated (the
popular summer foods are all full of water…Tomatoes, Lettuces, Summer Squashes,
etc.)
Fall/winter is all about storing energy (we
get all the dense vegetables…Sweet Potatoes, Winter Squashes, etc…. that are
energy powerhouses to fuel us through the winter) to get you through the winter
to make it to…Spring!
Week #22
November 7, 2019
- Potatoes: Sweet* – ? – read CSA Wall Chart for details
- Broccoli** – 1 bunch
- Peppers, Sweet*** – ? – read CSA Wall Chart for details
- Lettuce – 1 head
- Beans, Cranberry - ? – read CSA Wall Chart for details
- Cress, Curly/Pepper**** - 1 bunch
Total Items: 6
*Sweet Potatoes are one of the world’s healthiest foods
(good info and recipes)!
**Broccoli is one of the world’s healthiest foods (good info
and recipes)!
***Sweet Peppers are one of the world’s healthiest foods
(good info and recipes)!
****Curly/Pepper Cress
It’s speecy spicy, very good for you, and goes well in small
amounts in any salad, sandwich, wrap for starters…read on…
Pepper Cress – tangy/spicy herb that can be used raw in
salads, on sandwiches or wraps and you can toss a small amount in at the end of
a stir-fry or cooked recipe to give things a bit of a culinary punch
Peppercress Aioli…
more Peppercress recipes…the Smoothie/Juice and Hummus
recipes look pretty good (weights need to be translated as this is from the
UK)…
more recipes from a place that does Peppercress Sprouts more
than growing them in soil outdoors…
Web MD on “garden cress” (basically same as Pepper/Curly
Cress)…
http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientmono-453-garden%20cress.aspx?activeingredientid=453&
2.Foods that help fight breast cancer
Got this at the end of Breast Cancer month (October) but
it’s still good info (and our CSA provides us with 5 out of the 8 listed)…
3.Turkeys anyone?
Thanksgiving isn’t so far away, and now is the time to make
plans if you’d like a local/certified organic/heritage breed Turkey (sorry, but
at the moment, seems like you can’t get all three in one bird). If you want a
bird from 20 to 30 lbs., unless you’re getting a heritage breed bird, I’d
recommend getting two 10 to 15 lb. ones (you can ask me why in person…you might
not want to eat that big bird afterwards). Here are a few options…
A.Browder’s Birds – certified organic
You can reserve online with a $50 deposit fee and the birds
must be picked up at their farm in Mattituck from Monday, November 25th,
to Wednesday, November 27th
B.Makinajian Poultry Farm & Country Store – free range,
no antibiotics, no hormones
Will start taking orders after November 1st. Size
ranges from 10 to 30 lbs. Birds must be picked up at their farm in Huntington
from Monday, November 25th, to Wednesday, November 27th
between 9am to 6pm.
Give a call – 631-368-9320
Or stop by – 276 Cuba Hill Rd. (at intersection of Little
Plains Rd.), Huntington
Tell them suzanne sent you ๐ !
C.Heritage Foods – humanely raised, pasture raised, heritage
breeds, antibiotic free, not artificially inseminated
This Brooklyn based company has Turkeys available from Good
Shephard Poultry Ranch (Kansas) delivered fresh to your home (so the birds
aren’t local but the company is).
4.Click activism – you don’t have to do much, or spend
any money, to help make a positive change in the world
A.Tell
Governor Cuomo to stand up for environmental justice…
B.Tell Ben & Jerry’s…Round Up Ice Cream not “natural” or
“socially responsible”…GO ORGANIC!!!
C.Tell
lawmakers and government officials to stop the use of highly hazardous
pesticides (HHPs)…
D.Tell
Hannaford supermarkets (one of the largest supermarket chains in the northeast)
to protect the rights and well-being of dairy workers behind the store-brand
milk and to join the Milk With Dignity program…
E.Save the Tongass National Forest. Climate
change is real. We need more trees, not less, to stem the tide of the effects
of climate change…
F.Our national parks need to remain
national and not privatized (to not be used for clearcut logging and other
environmentally unfriendly activities) to remain healthy, since the USA (and
the rest of the planet) needs them to have clean air and water…
5.What you actually got last week
Week #21
October 31, 2019
- Potatoes: Sweet* – 2 lb. bag – $5.75
- Scallions** – 1 bunch - $3.75
- Cauliflower: Cheddar/Green/Purple/White*** – 1 head -
$3.00
- Lettuce: Boston, Green – 1 head - $3.50
- Broccoli Raab/Rabe/Rape - 1 bunch - $4.25
- Bitter Melon**** - 1 - $.75
Total Items: 6
Total Amount: $21.00
(We pay $20 per week for our CSA share…some weeks we get a
bit more, and it adds up over the course of the season. This week it was $1,
and so far it’s a grand total of $35.50 which is more than one CSA share! We
seem to always get at least one CSA share’s worth of food every year that we
didn’t pay for…some years two, and some between one and two…it’s all good! ๐)
*Sweet Potatoes are one of the world’s healthiest foods
(good info and recipes)!
**Scallions are one of the world’s healthiest foods (good
info and recipes)!
Well, this is for Leeks but you know what? Same botanical
family…basically the same benefits…
***Cauliflower is one of the world’s healthiest foods (good
info and recipes)!
****Bitter Melon gets its own email…check that out for info
and recipes
6.Information is power – heavy metals in baby food…oh
dear…

Bright Futures was found to contain heavy metals (arsenic and lead)…
For more info about how to create a healthy home and
lifestyle for children, check out the website for Healthy Babies Bright
Futures…

Network (the closest is Oyster Bay…unless one of you guys want to start a
Huntington Chapter…if so, talk to CSA member Vickie Muller who was involved in
the Huntington one when there was one)…

whenever possible.
