Happy Summer!
Can you help a fellow CSA member out? đ
Someone needs their CSA share held till Saturday. If you have room in your
fridge to hold their CSA share, please let us know when you stop by the CSA
today. It will be pre-packed and waiting for you to pick it up, and then we can
discuss how to connect yâall re: having it picked up. Thanks!
CSA weather reportâŠwarm
ImportantâŠif you call the Box Office to have a
bag packed for a late CSA pickup (by 10pm), do NOT leave messages at the Box
Office and expect the CSA to get them. It doesnât always happen (it didnât last
weekâŠnot good). You MUST speak directly to someone from the CSA. The call can
easily be transferred to the Sky Room Café where someone from the CSA can take
the phone call.
Latest CSA mystery solvedâŠthe missing bag of Beans was
located. đ Itâs always a good idea to check our CSA
Wall Chart before you start picking up your CSA produce, and check whatâs in
your bag(s) against the list again before you leave. Picking up your CSA share
can be like the story of the three bears. You can go home with too much, too
little, or the amount thatâs just right. Someone also forgot to take something
last week so itâs not such a silly idea to make sure you have everything before
you leave.
Itâs
time to weigh our CSA food!
- Please be aware that it may
take a little more time for you to collect your CSA share when weighing is
part of the experience, so plan accordingly.
- Check the CSA Wall Chart that
our farmer brings in every week before taking any food so you know what
youâre taking and how much to takeâŠassume nothing and please feel free to
ask questions!
- Bring your reading glasses, or
ask someone to help if you canât see the numbers on the scale clearly.
- PLEASE DO
NOT GO OVER THE AMOUNT STATED on the Wall Chart.
Please
err on the under side of the weight postedâŠNEVER over. It may not seem like
much to you, but we have 35 CSA members this week, and if every person is over
by ONE OUNCE (for crying out loud! Itâs only an ounce!!!) âŠthat means weâll be
short over 2 POUNDS of produce and 1 or 2 CSA members (and one of them could be
you) wonât get the food they paid for.
- IF you are asked to weigh more
than one food item at the same time (and you probably will at some point
in the CSA season)âŠplease follow the directions given to you, and weigh in
the order you are asked (you might not think thereâs any good reason to be
doing this but our farmer does, and that should be enough of a reason
right there but if you want a further explanation â ask someone working at
the CSA or contact suzanneâŠthere is always a method to the madness)
This email includesâŠ
- What you need to know
- Green smoothie primer
- EventsâŠboth near and far
- Click activism â you
donât have to do much, or spend any money, to help make a positive change
in the world
- What you actually got
last week
- What CSA foods have
sirtuins?
- And now, for something
completely different đ
Anything in these emails not directly related to the
functioning of the CSA feel free to take or leave at your discretion, and
anything related to health issues always consult with your physicians before
taking any action.
1.What you need to know (will be either new info to
first time CSA members, or reminders/old hat to returning CSA members)âŠ
Before you leave the houseâŠBRING BAGS
to pack up your food (CSA members are responsible for packing up their own
shares) â canvas/plastic/paperâŠbring whatever suits your fancy. The CSA does
NOT provide bags for CSA members.
Time â 3:30pm to 7:30pm
IF you need to pick up later than 7:30pm, call the Cinema
Arts Center Box Office between 3pm to 7:30pm at 631-423-7610 xt 0 and ask to
speak to someone from the CSA. We can pack a bag for you and leave it at the
Box Office but it MUST be picked up before the Box Office closes (call the Box
Office to check the timeâŠlately itâs been 9:30pm). If not, it wonât be there on
Friday. And do not leave a message at the Box OfficeâŠYOU
MUST SPEAK TO SOMEONE FROM THE CSA (otherwise the CSA will not be
responsible if your food doesnât get packed and left for you).
Place â Sky Room CafĂ© in the Cinema Arts
Centre at 423 Park Ave, Huntington
Parking â park in the all the way around at
the back of the building by the day care center (youâll see a fenced in
playground area with a sandbox)
When you arrive at the CSA â
- Check in at the desk with our friendly CSA worker
- Read the Wall Chart that tells us every week what weâre
getting, how much weâre getting, and what the farm charged us for itâŠsome
weeks itâs take one of everything but SOME WEEKS ITâS NOT!!! So you have
to make sure you read the Wall Chart every week, and not assume anything.
You can also ask your fellow CSA members that are working that day what
the story is for the day (they should have name tags on).
Before you leave the CSA â Make sure you have
everything on the list! If you get to talking with people, have kids with you,
etc., it can be easy to be distracted and if you get home and find out you
donât have everything that was on the list, youâre out of luck because at
7:31pm the food is donated to a local food organization thatâs waiting to pick
it up and get on their way.
The listâŠthis is a general list and youâll be sent another
email within the next week with the detailed list after I get it (which isnât
till the day of the CSAâŠthe list is subject to change without notice because
farming is like that! J .
However, most of the time itâs accurate and if itâs notâŠusually only one food
item will be changed)âŠ
CSA words to live byâŠwhen trying any new food that
youâve never eaten beforeâŠSTART SLOW! Read up about it (make sure
it doesnât interfere with any medications you might be taking or any health
conditions you might have), see what traditional/conventional ways itâs
prepared (cultures that have been eating certain foods for many years basically
have a good idea what theyâre doing and we can learn from that), try a small
portion, see how your body/digestive system reacts, and proceed from there.
Then try preparing in different ways and see what you come up with, and feel
free to ask for suggestion/info/recommendations!
Paraphrased wise words by a nutritionist that I read and
donât remember where I read it or who said it, BUT itâs pretty smart info
regarding eating seasonally in our part of the globeâŠ
Spring⊠is all about detoxing (what we get
from the CSA at this time is a lot of green things that are really good to help
clean us out from whatever we accumulated during the winter)
Interesting piece about spring greens (out of the 14 listed,
we get 12 of them with our CSAâŠwatercress nutritionally and botanically similar
to Peppercress) and detoxingâŠ
Summer is all about being hydrated (the
popular summer foods are all full of waterâŠTomatoes, Lettuces, Summer Squashes,
etc.)
Fall/winter is all about storing energy (we
get all the dense vegetablesâŠSweet Potatoes, Winter Squashes, etcâŠ. that are
energy powerhouses to fuel us through the winter) to get you through the winter
to make it toâŠSpring!

2.Green smoothie primerâŠ
Though they use a Vitamix, any comparable machine youâre
using to make smoothies should do the trick.
These CSA foods are mentioned in this articleâŠ
Beet Greens, Carrot Tops (which we might get this week),
Celery, Collard Greens, Kale, Romaine Lettuce, Spinach, Summer Squash, Swiss
Chard, Strawberries
And thereâs a recipe at the endâŠ
Tip I thought was very usefulâŠblend greens with a little
water, freeze in cubes (date and labelâŠmy suggestion), throw in smoothies as
needed.

bit more, and it adds up over the course of the season. This week it was $2,
and so far itâs a grand total of $8.25 which may not sound like much, butâŠjust
wait and see. We seem to always get at least one CSA shareâs worth of food
every year that we didnât pay forâŠsome years two, and some between one and
twoâŠitâs all good! đ)

6.What CSA foods have sirtuins?
File underâŠ
You learn something new every day whether you want to or
not! I never heard of the work sirtuins till I read this.
Theyâre really good for you, and the CSA foods we get that
have them are Onions and Parsley (which we got last week in our CSA Herb Share
which you can still jump in and be a part of). Theyâre growing Tumeric at our
farm, but not in large enough quantities yet to offer beyond the farm stand BUT
if you visit the farm in October with our CSA, you might find it there (and get
a 10% discount đ )âŠ
7.And now, for something completely different đ
I could identify at least 4 things we get in our CSA shares
(3 definite and 1 sketchyâŠitâs either one veg or another veg we get đ
) in the one arrangement that has fruits and vegetables in itâŠwhat can you
spot?
And some interesting ideas about floral arranging and
photography!
