3. Notes from the Farm
June 12, 2009
Strawberries are coming in and so is a lot of rain. We’ve had some rain EVERY DAY for the last twelve days. So it will soon dry out and we’ll be looking for rain. The weather systems seem to be doing this two weeks wet, then dry, and then back to wet thing.
Anyway, our Annual CSA Strawberry Picking Farm Tour is happening rain or shine on Saturday, June 27th. It’s a walking tour of some of our spring crops. The tours will begin at 10:30am, 12 noon, and 1:30pm. We’ll meet at the field on Rose Hill Road just east of our farm stand. It’s the 2nd right after the farm stand and it’s the field immediately on the right. Park outside the gate. There’s a LOT of traffic by late Saturday morning into the afternoon going east so leave yourself plenty of time (1 ½ hours minimum). This is your only chance to see the fields in this spring/summer season so we hope to see all our CSA members there (this is available to CSA members and immediate family members only). For any more info or directions call the farm which is open 7 days at 631-726-1900 between 9am and 4pm.

CSA member Jeff Tanenbaum will be volunteering again this year and HIGHLY recommends you check this event out for the day, or for the weekend! It's the year of Pete Seeger's 90th birthday (he, if his health and the fates allow, will be performing) and the 45th anniversary of the group's sloop, The Clearwater, the namesake of the festival. This year's performers also include Susan Tedeschi, The Persuasions, Arlo Guthrie, Jay & Molly Ungar, Alejandro Escovido and a plethora of others.

The Green Living Expo is a 2-day event designed to provide Long Island residents and business owners with the information they need to support a greener way of life here on Long Island. “Green Living” is a new concept for many Long Islanders, for others it has been a way of life for years. Regardless of which category you fall into, being “green” is a notion that has firmly taken root in our society.
The Green Living Expo will be the catalyst between businesses, organizations, and consumers looking for information, inspiration, and innovation. It will provide information to help move us in the direction of a lifestyle that is both economically viable and ecologically sound.
The Green Living Expo will have two full days of programming to make the event both educational and fun. Speakers have been selected for their passion, commitment, innovation, and authority on their “green” topic. There is no additional fee required to attend the programs/lectures/classes.

How?
Call the farm (631-726-1900) from 9:30am to 4:30pm, order using a credit card (minimum order of $20) and coordinate when you'll be picking up your seedlings with your CSA pickup.

7. Exchange Table Info
The table in the middle of the CSA is where we have our Exchange Table.
ONLY when we have enough CSA workers do we have an Exchange Table.
To make use of it…
1. Collect your CSA share
2. See if there’s something on the table that you’d like, and that you have something in your CSA share that you’d give up to have it
3. Put down the item from your CSA share (the ENTIRE item…not just a portion of it) and exchange it for the entire portion of the item on the Exchange Table
8. Spin the Wheel of Herbs
One of our CSA members emailed me and mentioned that he wasn’t thrilled with what we got last week as there were too many Herbs. This week is more of the same. I explained that what my take on it is that the farm is in a transition time where the greenhouse is empty, the winter crops are gone and the early planted ones aren’t big enough to harvest. It’s been very cool and wet this spring…not good growing weather (maybe for mushrooms?).
Herbs have more antioxidants than blueberries! They are very healthful and we Americans don’t use enough of them.
There’s a cool “wheel of Herbs” that will be at the Sign-In Desk you can take a look at. Email me if you want one. They’re less than $10 (I’ll be getting the exact price) and we can place an order for them. Makes the question of what to do with the Herbs a lot easier to answer.
