Happy Spring!
What’s missing this week…
1. Did anyone by chance take Flowers last week and didn’t realize you need to pay extra for a Flower Share? Two bunches were missing by the end of the night. Any info is appreciated. Yes, they were counted at the start and we had the correct number.
2. I’ve been asked to check with you guys about a missing plant! Between last Thursday afternoon to Friday AM, a hanging basket of lavender ivy geranium was taken by someone who shouldn’t have. It was located on the right as you walk towards the front door, on the ground. It was worth $15 and the loss was taken by a UU member who had to pay back the person who ordered it with her own money (and she’s unemployed). Did anyone by chance take it thinking it was for free? Did anyone see anyone taking it? Any info would help and this person would be happy to either get the plant back or be paid the $15 she put out for it. I mentioned to this person that there were other groups in the building that night and to check with them as well.
On the more cheerful side, if you are a Cablevision subscriber you can go to the News 12 website and under LI Naturally or Feature Stories…you should be able to see the CSA feature they did.
WE HAVE ROOM FOR ABOUT 50 MORE CSA MEMBERS! So, if you know of anyone who’d be interested…have them stop by, contact me, or give them a CSA brochure (which we have at the sign-in desk).

Called the nation's preeminent food journalist, Mississippi- born Craig Claiborne trained in Switzerland as a chef on the GI bill after World War II. On his return to the United States, he began writing articles for Gourmet and became an editor at the magazine. His career skyrocketed when The New York Times hired him as its first food columnist in 1957. Claiborne's columns, reviews and cookbooks introduced Americans to a wide range of international and ethnic food. Other newspapers followed The New York Times's lead, and soon a cadre of authoritative newspaper food writers helped attune millions of Americans to the finer points of good food and cooking. Our panel explores Claiborne's life, work, and his seminal influence on food journalism in America. With Molly O'Neill, former New York Times columnist, and author of the New York Cookbook; Betty Fussell, author of The Story of Corn and Raising Steaks; Anne Mendelson, author of Stand Facing the Stove, and Milk: the Surprising Story of Milk Through the Ages, and a contributing editor to Gourmet; David Leite, publisher/editor- in-chief, Leite's Culinaria, and author of The New Portuguese Table; John T. Edge, Director, Southern Foodways Alliance, University of Mississippi, contributing editor, Gourmet, author of Southern Belly. The panel will be moderated by Andrew F. Smith, editor of the Oxford Companion to American Food and Drink, and Food Studies professor. Sponsored by the Food Studies Program at The New School.

The Green Living Expo is a 2-day event designed to provide Long Island residents and business owners with the information they need to support a greener way of life here on Long Island. “Green Living” is a new concept for many Long Islanders, for others it has been a way of life for years. Regardless of which category you fall into, being “green” is a notion that has firmly taken root in our society.
The Green Living Expo will be the catalyst between businesses, organizations, and consumers looking for information, inspiration, and innovation. It will provide information to help move us in the direction of a lifestyle that is both economically viable and ecologically sound.
The Green Living Expo will have two full days of programming to make the event both educational and fun. Speakers have been selected for their passion, commitment, innovation, and authority on their “green” topic. There is no additional fee required to attend the programs/lectures/classes.

9. Exchange Table Info
The table in the middle of the CSA is where we have our Exchange Table.
ONLY when we have enough CSA workers do we have an Exchange Table.
To make use of it…
1. Collect your CSA share
2. See if there’s something on the table that you’d like, and that you have something in your CSA share that you’d give up to have it
3. Put down the item from your CSA share (the ENTIRE item…not just a portion of it) and exchange it for the entire portion of the item on the Exchange Table
10. Spin the Wheel of Herbs
One of our CSA members emailed me and mentioned that he wasn’t thrilled with what we got last week as there were too many Herbs. This week is more of the same. I explained that what my take on it is that the farm is in a transition time where the greenhouse is empty, the winter crops are gone and the early planted ones aren’t big enough to harvest. It’s been very cool and wet this spring…not good growing weather (maybe for mushrooms?).
Herbs have more antioxidants than blueberries! They are very healthful and we Americans don’t use enough of them.
There’s a cool “wheel of Herbs” that will be at the Sign-In Desk you can take a look at. Email me if you want one. They’re less than $10 (I’ll be getting the exact price) and we can place an order for them. Makes the question of what to do with the Herbs a lot easier to answer.
