Greetings!
What does one do with a ginormous Rutabaga, and how do you
cut it up without resorting to an axe or chainsaw? 😊
How to cut it up…
Thoughts on cutting up food…
- Do you have a sharp
knife? If not, a dull knife is always more dangerous than a sharp one so
consider getting it/them professionally sharpened. If I needed to get mine
sharpened I might check this guy out unless, any of you folks can
recommend someone locally that you love…
- Do you keep your knife
sharpened on a regular basis (using a honing steel…looks like a long
rod…ideally every time you use it)?
- Flat surfaces are safe
surfaces so always best to create flat, and not have rounded, surfaces
when cutting up vegetables
- Do you have a cut
resistant glove(s)? Not a bad investment. Mine have Kevlar and these don’t
but if they work, they work. Check these out (you don’t have to only use
them when you’re working with a mandoline)…
The above piece about cutting up Rutabaga recommends peeling
it. I can’t be bothered (I refer to myself as a lazy gourmet 😊
), the peels of many foods (as long as they’re certified organic) can be more
nutritious than the food, and there’s mostly no need to do it. Organic
Rutabagas don’t have ucky wax on them, so don’t need to be peeled to get any
off. Apparently, I’m not the only who thinks this is a good idea…
What to do with a ginormous Rutabaga…start with some
Rutabaga Fries!
Recipes for Rutabaga Fries with slight variations in
flavoring (both recommend peeling…I’d try half with the peel, and half without,
and then decide which I prefer)…
AND…check out these other cool ideas and recipes…from
roodles (Rutabaga noodles) and a raw salad, to cake and a gratin…
Happy cooking! 😊
