Greetings!
If you missed Strawberry picking in June, it’s time to take
advantage of your last chance to get a behind the scenes tour of your CSA farm,
Green Thumb Farm, this Saturday, October 22nd!
It’s rain or shine but as of today, the weather is supposed
to be mostly sunny, upper 50s, and a bit breezy.
If you have any questions about growing food in your home
garden, these are knowledgeable people to talk to and it’s your last chance
this year to get those questions answered, and get some helpful hints for your
next growing season.
It’s also a good opportunity to shop at their farm stand
(there are some things we never see at the CSA because they either don’t travel
well…like Squash Blossoms…or they don’t have enough for all of us CSA members),
and see what you might be interested in buying at their end of season sale
(last year it was 20% off) on all non-perishable goods if you’re interested in
stopping by the first weekend in December when the farm stand closes for the
year.
You MUST make a reservation as there’s only so
much room in the wagons that will be riding us around the property. However,
you can probably make a reservation as late as 9am Saturday morning before you
head out to the farm and see what spots are available.
Here’s the details…
Saturday, October 22nd
10:30am OR 11:30am OR 12:30pm
Annual CSA Pumpkin Picking Hayride Farm Tour!
Green Thumb Farm
829 Montauk Highway
Water Mill, NY 11979
FREE
Call to reserve your seat(s) on the wagon (space is
limited)…
631-726-1900 (9:30am to 4:30pm Mon to Sun)
This farm tour is for CSA members and their immediate
family ONLY! If you’re sharing a CSA share with someone, only one
person/family can attend (people sharing a CSA share usually divide the farm
tours with one going in June and the other in October), and you need to reserve
your spot using the CSA member’s name as the farm doesn’t recognize CSA share
partners. However, if it’s just one person coming you can bring one person with
you…and if that one person happens to be your CSA share partner, that works.
You’ll be getting a tractor pulled hayride to see a
different part of the farm then we did in June, a discussion of the fall
harvest, and a visit with the farm’s critters.
Everyone attending can pick a Pumpkin* to bring home.
*In full disclosure…the Pumpkins are not certified organic,
and are not grown at Green Thumb Farm. Why? These are Pumpkins grown for
carving and not eating (though you certainly are welcome to eat the seeds and
the Pumpkin if you’d like).
Last but not least…
My recommendation for a bite to eat afterwards…
Bay Burger in Sag Harbor…
For the Hamptons this is a reasonably priced place, and it’s
about a 10 to 15 minute drive from the farm. They have a grass-fed burgers (or
at least they had the option last time I was there), a great fried fish
sandwich (don’t eat much fried anything anymore but make an exception for
this), TWO veggie burgers (black bean and falafel), they bake their own burger
buns, and if you look closely on the counter you’ll see the listing for the 2
veggie sides they always have (using local produce) which we always get and are
always pleased with, as well as local craft beers, and local (not organic but
natural…NY milk and no preservatives/additives) ice cream. There’s also a
separate space for families with kids that always has Nickelodeon on.
First year CSA member Jason D’Orazio went to Bay Burger
after Strawberry picking at Green Thumb Farm this past June with his wife and
young daughter, and were pleased enough want to go back (the sign of a happy
dining experience in my book).
Green Thumb Farm’s 12th generation of young farmers (Jesse,
Ray, Clinton, and the rest of the gang) look forward to meeting and seeing you
this Saturday!
