Happy Spring!
First things first…HOW ARE YOU??? Hope you’re healthy
and staying sane during these challenging times.
Me? Doing ok…would like to find a cache of Seventh
Generation 2-ply Toilet Paper in a 12 pack somewhere 😊
but otherwise, really can’t complain since we’re all healthy in this neck of
the woods.
Am writing to let you know that Green Thumb CSA – Huntington
will have its first pickup on Thursday, June 4th, and hope this
finds you ready to join and as eager as I am to start enjoying Green Thumb
Farm’s local certified organic food. This year we have a 28 week season from
June 4th to December 10th, and if there’s sufficient
interest there will be an additional 8 week CSA Winter Share from December 18th
to February 4th. Please respond to this email RIGHT NOW if you’re
planning on joining our CSA this year as we need a minimum of 30 CSA members
for the farm to come to Huntington. And, let me know if you need someone to
share your CSA share with…we’ll see what we can do to make that happen.
PLEASE RESPOND TO Suzanne directly at gtcsahuntington@gmail.com. Also PLEASE and sign up to receive these blog posts at the top of the blog! You can also contact us directly from the blog site. Scroll down to see the Contact Us Anytime! fill-in form.
Of course, there’s nothing more important than making sure
our CSA pickup will be as safe as humanly possible. The farm, and the CSA, are
taking steps regarding safety procedures. Initially, the CSA pickup process
will have some differences, but it’s a work in process so will keep you posted
in upcoming emails on the details.
As far as CSA members working at the CSA, it’s also a work
in progress on figuring out the best/safest way to be able to do this…will keep
y’all posted as things evolve.
We should be able to have CSA meetings at some point as it’s
easy to keep socially distant in the Sky Room Café but again…one day at a time
and safety first. As far as the Strawberry Picking Farm tour in June…will keep
you posted as to whether it’s happening or not, and the details. Also, hope to
be able to have restaurant outings at some point again this year (smaller
non-chain restaurants REALLY need our support) but again…one step at a time and
safety first.
Look out for the next CSA email that will contain the
contract attached to it (prices haven’t gone up from last year), and
instructions for submitting your paperwork.
Spread the word! CSA shares across the country (and on Long
Island) are selling out fast and becoming a “thing” this year as…
- Concerns about general
health and (people’s immune systems specifically) are sending the clear
message from every medical person in the media for everyone to be eating
more of a whole food plant based diet (translated…eat your vegetables 😊 )
- Short of growing food in
your own garden, CSAs have the least amount of people touching your food
(that’s why it’s always been called the farm to table movement…it’s a
literal thing) over Amazon, home delivery services, takeout, shopping at a
supermarket, and with a CSA there’s accountability as to who the people
are that are handling your food more than these other options. The food
supply chain of a CSA is very short….farmer/CSA pickup site/you!
- People are realizing the
importance of supporting their local farmers as the US global agribusiness
food supply chain is breaking/broken. Unlike grocery stores or farmer’s
markets (where food is selling out unbelievably fast, or in some cases
people are having to wait on lines to even get in to shop), our CSA is a
guaranteed reliable secure source of fresh, healthy, and delicious food.
Green Thumb Farm has been growing food on Long Island for 380 years, and
the 11th generation of Halsey family farmers (2 men…Ray Jr. & Jesse,
and 2 women…Sammy & Maddy, all in their twenties) need our support now
more than ever to keep them doing what they love to do, and are very good
at doing. And for over 20 years, Green Thumb CSA – Huntington members have
gotten to enjoy the literal fruits of their labors (though it’s mostly
vegetables and herbs 😊 ).
- With all the attention
on the pandemic, not sure how many people are also aware of the
megadrought on the west coast where a lot of produce comes from (New York
imports 85% of the food that’s available to purchase). It’s another reason
to be supporting our local farmers (California growing as much produce as
it does for the rest of the country is just not sustainable).
Hope to hear from you soon, that all is well with you and
yours, and will get to see you soon (from a safe distance 😊
).
Organically yours,
suzanne
