For Thursday 10/17/2013 Pick up....
Happy Autumn!

Weather report for CSA…warm, slight chance of drizzle and breezy!

Our Annual Pumpkin Picking Hay Riding CSA Farm Tour is THIS Saturday, October 19th! See Event Listings and #5 for details.

Next CSA meeting is scheduled for Saturday, October 26st from 10:30am to noon (unless the farm tour is rescheduled for this day due to rain on the 19th). The main topic will be…What exactly is meant by organic food, and why is it important to be certified organic (or is it?). Also, we’ll be starting to talk about next year.

Organic Tomato Sauce or Sun Dried Tomatoes anyone? Our farm is offering us 20 lb boxes of their own certified organic Red Italian Plum/Roma/Paste (all the same thing) Tomatoes for $45.00 per box if you’re interested in making your own canned Tomatoes or Tomato Sauce OR (if you have a dehydrator) making your own Sun Dried Tomatoes. To place an order, call the farm (631-726-1900) any day from 9 am to 5pm, but no later than noon on Wednesday for a Thursday delivery. Payment is to be made by credit card so have your credit card ready when you make the call.

FREE tickets to the NAVEL Expo (see under Event Listings for Nov 3rd) at Wild by Nature, the Vitamin Shoppe and Cactus Salon!

This email includes…

1. Your CSA does not need you this week, however…
2. It’s time to weigh!!!
3 Mushrooms anybody????
4. This week’s list (subject to change without notice…farming is like that!)
5. News from the Farm
6. Visual Guide to Winter Squash (with recipes)
7. The Raw Food Diet is Dead!!!
8. Event Listings
9. Click here to help change the world!
10. What you actually got last week
11. Take a short quiz on food storage/safety and help the terrific group Food Corps earn $$$!
12. And now for something completely different…

1. Your CSA does not need you this week, however…

You can ALWAYS stop by the CSA a little before 3:30 or 5:30 to offer to help in case someone doesn’t show up (or is late) without letting anyone know…life happens! 

If you didn’t get a confirmation email from Judi (occasionally it’s me), you’re not scheduled to work this week.

2. It’s time to weigh!!!

A. Check the wall chart before taking any food so you know what you’re taking and how much to take…assume nothing and please ask questions! 

B. Bring your reading glasses or ask someone to help if you can’t see the numbers on the scale clearly.

C. PLEASE DO NOT GO OVER THE AMOUNT STATED on the Wall Chart. Please err on the under side of the weight posted…NEVER over. It may not seem like much to you but we have 56 members and if every person is off by ONE OUNCE (for crying out loud! It’s only an ounce!!!) …that means we’ll be short almost THREE AND A HALF POUNDS of produce and 3 CSA members won’t get the food they paid for. And I’m sure you wouldn’t want it to be you.

D. IF you are asked to weigh more than one food item at the same time…please follow the directions given to you and weigh in the order you are asked (you might not think there’s a good reason to be doing this but our farmer does and that should be enough of a reason right there…if you want a further explanation – ask suzanne…there is a method to the madness )

3. Mushrooms (or more Mushrooms) anybody???

We have a few people waiting and hoping that they’ll be able to get Mushrooms before the end of the season which is Halloween, October 31st. We need enough people to commit to 3 1/2 lbs more to get that 3rd five pound box.

People don’t have to be CSA members to get Mushrooms so ask anyone you know who might be interested and have them get in touch OR let you know.

If you’re interested…ask! If the only thing that’s stopping you is that you share with someone and they don’t want what you want…ask! I bet I could find someone for you to share with (or at least I’d try  ). If you have a share and want more than your one share…ask!

Anybody interested in the Mushroom Share who hasn’t spoken up yet? Let me know!  We’re starting another waiting list for a 3rd five pound box. Anyone who HAS a Mushroom Share…want to upgrade your share to get more Mushrooms? Just a thought! 

4. This week’s list (subject to change without notice…farming is like that!)

5. News from the Farm

October 1, 2013

October is here and it’s time for our CSA fall farm tour and Pumpkin picking! The date is Saturday, October 19th. If it’s raining HEAVY, it will be postponed to October 26th. Call the farm before you leave if you’re in doubt at 631-726-1900.

It will be a riding tour on a wagon pulled by a tractor starting at our farm stand, located at 829 Montauk Highway in Water Mill, and going through some of our farm fields. We will be viewing fall crops…Oriental greens, Winter Radishes, Turnips and perennial herbs, as well as several other crops.

Reservations are required as space is limited on each wagon. Times are 10am, 11:30am and 1pm. If these fill up, another tour will be added at 2:30pm. This is for our CSA members and immediate family only. If you are sharing a CSA share, you need to decide who’s showing up for this tour and please reserve in the name of the CSA member. It’s your last chance to visit the farm and talk to Farmer Bill until Strawberry season June 2014!

We urge any interested CSA members to join us and see what we’re doing.

Call Green Thumb Farm at 631-726-1900 for reservations between 9am to 4:30pm daily.

Thanks a lot! 

Organically yours,
Farmer Bill (Halsey)

More than ten thousand youth leaders from every walk of life — college students, young environmental justice leaders, DREAMers, young people of faith, young workers — will come together to learn from one another, to build and launch strategic campaigns in their own communities. We are leading the fight to solve the climate crisis and build a clean, just and thriving economy by standing up on our campuses and in our communities to demand real solutions that work for workers and Millennials. We have put our fists in the air and our bodies on the line to fight Keystone XL, fracking, and mountaintop removal — and we’re willing to do it again.
Are older people welcome at Power Shift 2013?
Yes! While Power Shift 2013 is largely a youth convergence, people of all ages are welcome and encouraged to attend. Power Shift 2013 is an important space for young people to come together, but we also value working with people of all ages, and learning from other movement leaders and elders.
