** PICKUP is TODAY Wednesday ** Huntington CSA Wednesday, November 27, 2019 Week #25

Happy Autumn!

In the spirit of the holiday…MANY THANKS to each and every CSA member for making it possible for us all to be eating local, seasonal, certified organic bounty from Green Thumb Farm (can’t happen without you 😊 )

CSA weather report…”warm”, windy and rain from 3pm to 6pm (?)

THANKSGIVING ALERT!!! The week of Thanksgiving, our CSA pickup day will be TODAY!Wednesday, November 27th , 2pm to 7:30pm…if you know you’re not coming next week (and no one is going to pick up your CSA share) PLEASE let us know so we might be able to leave early…but if you can’t make it till 7:30pm that’s totally fine too!

Someone asked me about this so guess it’s time to let y’all know that the last day of CSA our regular CSA season is Thursday, December 12th.

Important…if you call the Box Office to have a bag packed for a late CSA pickup (by 10pm), do NOT leave messages at the Box Office and expect the CSA to get them. It doesn’t always happen (it didn’t last week…not good). You MUST speak directly to someone from the CSA. The call can easily be transferred to the Sky Room Café where someone from the CSA can take the phone call (or if the CSA is outside or in another location, they can still get a CSA member to come to the Box Office to take the call).

Also important…if you send anyone to the CSA to pick up food, please tell them to BRING BAGS!

This email includes…

  1. What you need to know
  2. Food poisoning (and preventing it) starts at home!
  3. Turkeys anyone?
  4. Click activism – you don’t have to do much, or spend any money, to help make a positive change in the world
  5. What you actually got last week
  6. Vegan Thanksgiving update
  7. Thanksgiving in NYC on the “L” train…
  8. Prizes!!!
  9. The Environmental Working Group’s Guide to Thanksgiving…
  10. And now, for something completely different 😊

Anything in these emails not directly related to the functioning of the CSA feel free to take or leave at your discretion, and anything related to health issues always consult with your physician(s) before taking any action.

1.What you need to know (will be either new info to first time CSA members, or reminders/old hat to returning CSA members)…

Before you leave the houseBRING BAGS to pack up your food (CSA members are responsible for packing up their own shares) – canvas/plastic/paper…bring whatever suits your fancy. The CSA does NOT provide bags for CSA members.
Time – 3:30pm to 7:30pm
IF you need to pick up later than 7:30pm, call the Cinema Arts Center Box Office between 3pm to 7:30pm at 631-423-7610 xt 0 and ask to speak to someone from the CSA. We can pack a bag for you and leave it at the Box Office but it MUST be picked up before the Box Office closes (call the Box Office to check the time…lately it’s been 9:30pm). If not, it won’t be there on Friday. And do not leave a message at the Box OfficeYOU MUST SPEAK TO SOMEONE FROM THE CSA (otherwise the CSA will not be responsible if your food doesn’t get packed and left for you).
Place РSky Room Caf̩ in the Cinema Arts Centre at 423 Park Ave, Huntington
Parking – park in the all the way around at the back of the building by the day care center (you’ll see a fenced in playground area with a sandbox)
When you arrive at the CSA
  1. Check in at the desk with our friendly CSA worker
  2. Read the Wall Chart that tells us every week what we’re getting, how much we’re getting, and what the farm charged us for it…some weeks it’s take one of everything but SOME WEEKS IT’S NOT!!! So you have to make sure you read the Wall Chart every week, and not assume anything. You can also ask your fellow CSA members that are working that day what the story is for the day (they should have name tags on).
Before you leave the CSA – Make sure you have everything on the list! If you get to talking with people, have kids with you, etc., it can be easy to be distracted and if you get home and find out you don’t have everything that was on the list, you’re out of luck because at 7:31pm the food is donated to a local food organization that’s waiting to pick it up and get on their way.

Veggie info sheets added as needed. This is the link to the: Veggie Info Sheets. Print out, put in a notebook and you end up with a cookbook at the end of the CSA season. Also there are good tips on storage, prep, and nutrition.

The list…this is a general list and you’ll be sent another email within the next week with the detailed list after I get it (which isn’t till the day of the CSA…the list is subject to change without notice because farming is like that!  J . However, most of the time it’s accurate and if it’s not…usually only one food item will be changed)…

CSA words to live by…when trying any new food that you’ve never eaten before…START SLOW!  Read up about it (make sure it doesn’t interfere with any medications you might be taking or any health conditions you might have), see what traditional/conventional ways it’s prepared (cultures that have been eating certain foods for many years basically have a good idea what they’re doing and we can learn from that), try a small portion, see how your body/digestive system reacts, and proceed from there. Then try preparing in different ways and see what you come up with, and feel free to ask for suggestion/info/recommendations!

Paraphrased wise words by a nutritionist that I read and don’t remember where I read it or who said it, BUT it’s pretty smart info regarding eating seasonally in our part of the globe…
Spring… is all about detoxing (what we get from the CSA at this time is a lot of green things that are really good to help clean us out from whatever we accumulated during the winter)
Interesting piece about spring greens (out of the 14 listed, we get 12 of them with our CSA…watercress nutritionally and botanically similar to Peppercress) and detoxing…
Summer is all about being hydrated (the popular summer foods are all full of water…Tomatoes, Lettuces, Summer Squashes, etc.)
Fall/winter is all about storing energy (we get all the dense vegetables…Sweet Potatoes, Winter Squashes, etc…. that are energy powerhouses to fuel us through the winter) to get you through the winter to make it to…Spring!

2.Food poisoning (and preventing it) starts at home!

Something to avoid during the upcoming holidays…and every day! 😊 While 1 in 3 Americans are concerned about getting food poisoning thru someone else’s bad kitchen hygiene practices, the truth is the majority of food poisoning happens at home. Symptoms can show up anywhere from hours to WEEKS after ingesting contaminated foods so while one might “know” what made them sick…maybe not.

3.Turkeys anyone?

Thanksgiving isn’t so far away, and now is the time to make plans if you’d like a local/certified organic/heritage breed Turkey (sorry, but at the moment, seems like you can’t get all three in one bird). If you want a bird from 20 to 30 lbs., unless you’re getting a heritage breed bird, I’d recommend getting two 10 to 15 lb. ones (you can ask me why in person…you might not want to eat that big bird afterwards). Here are a few options…

A.Browder’s Birds – certified organic
You can reserve online with a $50 deposit fee and the birds must be picked up at their farm in Mattituck from Monday, November 25th, to Wednesday, November 27th

B.Makinajian Poultry Farm & Country Store – free range, no antibiotics, no hormones
Will start taking orders after November 1st. Size ranges from 10 to 30 lbs. Birds must be picked up at their farm in Huntington from Monday, November 25th, to Wednesday, November 27th between 9am to 6pm.
Give a call – 631-368-9320
Or stop by – 276 Cuba Hill Rd. (at intersection of Little Plains Rd.), Huntington
Tell them suzanne sent you 😊 !

C.Heritage Foods – humanely raised, pasture raised, heritage breeds, antibiotic free, not artificially inseminated
This Brooklyn based company has Turkeys available from Good Shephard Poultry Ranch (Kansas) delivered fresh to your home (so the birds aren’t local but the company is).

4.Click activism – you don’t have to do much, or spend any money, to help make a positive change in the world

A.To have “clean food” we need clean water. There’s a movie called Dark Waters that opened last Friday in NYC and Huntington in December, and it explores this issue. I thought it was going to be playing at the Cinema Arts Centre (and so did they), but the dopey film company gave it to the other movie theater in Huntington instead (grrrrr). Go see it wherever it’s playing, and sign the petition and watch the trailer for the movie here…

And learn how to protect yourself and anyone else you care about…

B.To have “clean food” we need clean air too. I just submitted a Save Our Environment comment to support strong clean car standards that save taxpayer money and keep my family healthier. Can you join me and take action protect these critical standards? For the health of our nation, we cannot afford to go backward. Click here…

C.Protect organic food standards and prohibit hydroponically grown food from being labelled as certified organic (very short version…you can’t get the same nutrients and minerals as you do from soil grown food)…

D.Don’t give antibiotics to healthy farm animals…

E.Consumers of organic and natural products/foods want a green new deal…

5.What you actually got last week

Week #24
November 21, 2019

  1. Sweet Potatoes* – 1 ½ lb. bag – $4.50
  2. Collard Greens** – 1 bunch - $4.50
  3. Peppers, Sweet: Banana, Bell, Corno di Toro, Hungarian Wax, Lunchbox*** – 1 ½ lb. bag – $4.50
  4. Radishes, Winter: Black Spanish, Daikon, Green Meat, Misato (Watermelon)**** – 2 lb. bag  – $4.25
  5. Cabbage: Savoy***** - 1 head - $3.50

Total Items: 5
Total Amount: $21.25
(We pay $20 per week for our CSA share…some weeks we get a bit more, and it adds up over the course of the season. This week it was $1, and so far it’s a grand total of $40.75 which is a tad over two CSA shares! We seem to always get at least one CSA share’s worth of food every year that we didn’t pay for…some years two, and some between one and two…it’s all good! 😊)

*Sweet Potatoes are one of the world’s healthiest foods (good info and recipes)!

**Collard Greens are one of the world’s healthiest foods (good info and recipes)!
Great ideas for eating Collards…

***Sweet Peppers are one of the world’s healthiest foods (good info and recipes)!
And so are Hot Peppers if you get a rogue hot one…

****How to cook/eat Winter Radishes…

*****Cabbage is one of the world’s healthiest foods (good info and recipes)!

6.Vegan Thanksgiving update

Despite the lousy weather (rain/cold/windy) on Sunday, over 200 people volunteered to distribute over 154,000 pounds of healthy vegetarian groceries, and share 300 vegan entrees.

There are still many events going on till December 2nd for anyone to participate and volunteer. There are also many ways to participate. You can donate vegan clothing, bring a vegan meal, raise money to help pay for this event (rented tables, gas to transport stuff, etc.), donate money (a donation of $32 will help pay for food for one person for a year), and spread the word on your social media accounts.

For more info and to participate…

And here’s some vegan Turkey alternatives (unfortunately, none organic and all highly processed), and some main dish recipes that actually feature VEGETABLES (what a concept 😊 )!

8.Prizes!!!

My prediction is that Fatty Liver Disease is going to be the new Type 2 Diabetes for adults (and probably younger people the way things are going these days regarding obesity and what they’re eating). However, you can make your liver healthier. This series also has info on the heart/liver connection, as well as gall bladder info. Doesn’t sound very sexy but our livers are a major toxin filter of the human body…a VERY important job. So it’s worth it to keep your liver happy and healthy. 😊 And sure you know that eating organic local seasonal produce will most likely be part of the plan.

Happy Autumn!

OUR CSA IS NOT IN THE SKY ROOM CAFÉ THIS WEEK! We’re in our alternate lobby location near the upper parking lot stairs. There will be signs, and you can always ask at the Cinema Box Office.

2.Green Thumb Farm on PBS the other night and more!

Boy, was I surprised when I saw Green Thumb Farm and some of the Halsey family in a documentary on PBS that I sat down to watch the other night (saw Bill Halsey– our former CSA coordinator at the farm, Johanna Halsey – you’ll see her working at their farm stand, and Ray, Jr. – the 11th generation of Halseys…farmer and son of Johanna’s sister Patty…who’s also at the farm stand working with her sister). And there’s a bunch of footage of the farm used in the film.

It's about the Shinnecock Indian Nation in the Hamptons and land rights…

Also, our CSA farm, Green Thumb Farm is a participant in the East End Food Institute’s partnership with Stony Brook Southampton's Residency Program in Social Medicine, a hands-on culinary nutrition program.  Food as Medicine classes explore topics such as local food and seasonality, self-care, meal preparation, and mindful eating. Each class is facilitated by Paula Montagna, MS, RD, CDN, CNSC, Director of Nutrition at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. The participants leave feeling inspired to consider how food choices impact overall health and can empower us to feel our best. Ingredients for each class are sourced from local producers…one of which is Green Thumb Farm!

4.Click activism – you don’t have to do much, or spend any money, to help make a positive change in the world

A.Tell the EPA it’s time to get paraquat off the market. This extremely toxic chemical has already been banned in 30 countries, yet use is going up in the U.S. Urge EPA officials to do their job…

B.Ban chlorpyrifos worldwide…support this global campaign to get it off our food and out of our children’s bodies ASAP…

C.Tell the State Department: No Keystone XL pipeline. Will you join me?

D.Bought CBD oil on Amazon? It might be the real thing—or it might not. Testing by the Organic and Natural Health Association reveals that the source, quality and content of hemp oils sold on Amazon vary widely. Why? Because Amazon refuses to weed out the fakes. 6.Vegan Thanksgiving

What’s Vegan Thanksgiving? The obvious answer is that it’s a Thanksgiving being celebrated by vegans or in a vegan manner (see below for recipes and vegan Turkey alternatives), BUT it happens to be an event put on by the organization that we donate any leftover CSA food to (Community Solidarity…formerly known as the Long Island Chapter of Food Not Bombs) that bills this event as the world’s largest vegan Thanksgiving (last year they provided food for approximately 3,700 people)! It’s taking place on Sunday, November 24th in Hempstead (though there are events happening around this from November 23rd to December 2nd). There are many ways to participate. You can donate vegan clothing, bring a vegan meal, raise money to help pay for this event (rented tables, gas to transport stuff, etc.), and spread the word on your social media accounts.

For more info and to participate…

And here’s some vegan Turkey alternatives (unfortunately, none organic and all highly processed), and some main dish recipes that actually feature VEGETABLES (what a concept 😊 )!

8.How the frontrunner Democratic candidates plan to change American agriculture

If it’s upsetting to “big ag”, it’s good for people and the planet…

9.And now, for something completely different 😊

Every library in the United States should have one of these and replicate the program…

I look at the programs for kids at the Huntington Library that include a food component, and all I see is them eating basically sugar, and at “best” white flour pizza. Nary a vegetable or anything approaching healthy in sight…ever.

Fatty Liver online Docu Class
FREE
To register…

My prediction is that Fatty Liver Disease is going to be the new Type 2 Diabetes for adults (and probably younger people the way things are going these days regarding obesity and what they’re eating). However, you can make your liver healthier. This series also has info on the heart/liver connection, as well as gall bladder info. Doesn’t sound very sexy but our livers are a major toxin filter of the human body…a VERY important job. So it’s worth it to keep your liver happy and healthy. 😊 And sure you know that eating organic local  seasonal produce will most likely be part of the plan.
