TONIGHT @ 7PM!! LAST CALL CSA Culinary Extravaganza! @ Thai USA, Huntington NY Wed., 10-30-2019 TONIGHT

Greetings!

We’re getting Bitter Melon this week at our CSA!

If you’d like to join a bunch of us tonight at 7pm for Bitter Melon 101 at Thai USA in Huntington village, and get some ideas as to how to cook it and how it might taste, call the restaurant at 631-427-8464 after 5pm, and leave your name and number in your party (reservation name of group…suzanne), and we’ll see you later (you can have mine…I get it here all the time 😊 )!

Everyone can order and pay for their own food, but we’ll all be treated to some extra Bitter Melon dishes to check out at no additional cost (Bitter Melon stir fry with Egg…typical Thai style, Bitter Melon w/out Egg…if there are any vegans, Bitter Melon Soup…non-vegan with Pork or Beef). You can always ask for Bitter Melon at Thai USA (though it’s not listed on the menu) BUT they don’t always have it. If they do, it’s only the stir-fry version (which you can order vegan style if that’s what you prefer).

Thai USA is a family run business that‘s been in Huntington for a VERY long time (thinking 15 years at least?). Owner/chef Danny, ex-wife Tiki, and their daughter Pat, have been working hard at keeping the locals happy, while showing them a taste of Thailand. The menu runs from classic Thai dishes to fusion mashups. Danny was raised near water so he’s a fan of cooking seafood and fish. There was another Thai place in the same building (or next door?) before them which was the first Thai restaurant in Huntington (to the best of my memory) but it wasn’t very good (will tell story of eating there if asked 😊 ).

So far there’s 11 of us…

TONIGHT Wednesday, October 30th

7pm

Huntington CSA Thursday, October 24, 2019 Week #20

Happy Autumn!

CSA weather report…pleasant! 😊

Important…if you call the Box Office to have a bag packed for a late CSA pickup (by 10pm), do NOT leave messages at the Box Office and expect the CSA to get them. It doesn’t always happen (it didn’t last week…not good). You MUST speak directly to someone from the CSA. The call can easily be transferred to the Sky Room Café where someone from the CSA can take the phone call (or if the CSA is outside or in another location, they can still get a CSA member to come to the Box Office to take the call).

Also important…if you send anyone to the CSA to pick up food, please tell them to BRING BAGS!

It’s time to weigh our CSA food!

  1. Please be aware that it may take a little more time for you to collect your CSA share when weighing is part of the experience, so plan accordingly.

  1. Check the CSA Wall Chart that our farmer brings in every week before taking any food so you know what you’re taking and how much to take…assume nothing and please feel free to ask questions!

  1. Bring your reading glasses, or ask someone to help if you can’t see the numbers on the scale clearly.

  1. PLEASE DO NOT GO OVER THE AMOUNT STATED on the Wall Chart.

Please err on the under side of the weight posted…NEVER over. It may not seem like much to you, but we have 35 CSA members this week, and if every person is over by ONE OUNCE (for crying out loud! It’s only an ounce!!!) …that means we’ll be short over 2 POUNDS of produce and 1 or 2 CSA members (and one of them could be you) won’t get the food they paid for.

  1. IF you are asked to weigh more than one food item at the same time (and you probably will at some point in the CSA season)…please follow the directions given to you, and weigh in the order you are asked (you might not think there’s any good reason to be doing this but our farmer does, and that should be enough of a reason right there but if you want a further explanation – ask someone working at the CSA or contact suzanne…there is always a method to the madness)

This email includes…

  1. What you need to know
  2. It’s that time of year to start thinking about voting (but it’s not what you think 😊 )
  3. Turkeys anyone?
  4. Click activism – you don’t have to do much, or spend any money, to help make a positive change in the world
  5. What you actually got last week
  6. Holistic psychiatrist Dr. Kelly Brogan recommends…
  7. Prizes!
  8. Crows eating people food get people health problems
  9. And now, for something completely different 😊

Anything in these emails not directly related to the functioning of the CSA feel free to take or leave at your discretion, and anything related to health issues always consult with your physicians before taking any action.

1.What you need to know (will be either new info to first time CSA members, or reminders/old hat to returning CSA members)…

Before you leave the houseBRING BAGS to pack up your food (CSA members are responsible for packing up their own shares) – canvas/plastic/paper…bring whatever suits your fancy. The CSA does NOT provide bags for CSA members.
Time – 3:30pm to 7:30pm
IF you need to pick up later than 7:30pm, call the Cinema Arts Center Box Office between 3pm to 7:30pm at 631-423-7610 xt 0 and ask to speak to someone from the CSA. We can pack a bag for you and leave it at the Box Office but it MUST be picked up before the Box Office closes (call the Box Office to check the time…lately it’s been 9:30pm). If not, it won’t be there on Friday. And do not leave a message at the Box OfficeYOU MUST SPEAK TO SOMEONE FROM THE CSA (otherwise the CSA will not be responsible if your food doesn’t get packed and left for you).
Place РSky Room Caf̩ in the Cinema Arts Centre at 423 Park Ave, Huntington
Parking – park in the all the way around at the back of the building by the day care center (you’ll see a fenced in playground area with a sandbox)
When you arrive at the CSA
  1. Check in at the desk with our friendly CSA worker
  2. Read the Wall Chart that tells us every week what we’re getting, how much we’re getting, and what the farm charged us for it…some weeks it’s take one of everything but SOME WEEKS IT’S NOT!!! So you have to make sure you read the Wall Chart every week, and not assume anything. You can also ask your fellow CSA members that are working that day what the story is for the day (they should have name tags on).
Before you leave the CSA – Make sure you have everything on the list! If you get to talking with people, have kids with you, etc., it can be easy to be distracted and if you get home and find out you don’t have everything that was on the list, you’re out of luck because at 7:31pm the food is donated to a local food organization that’s waiting to pick it up and get on their way.

Veggie info sheets added as needed. This is the link to the: Veggie Info Sheets. Print out, put in a notebook and you end up with a cookbook at the end of the CSA season. Also there are good tips on storage, prep, and nutrition.

The list…this is a general list and you’ll be sent another email within the next week with the detailed list after I get it (which isn’t till the day of the CSA…the list is subject to change without notice because farming is like that!  J . However, most of the time it’s accurate and if it’s not…usually only one food item will be changed)…

CSA words to live by…when trying any new food that you’ve never eaten before…START SLOW!  Read up about it (make sure it doesn’t interfere with any medications you might be taking or any health conditions you might have), see what traditional/conventional ways it’s prepared (cultures that have been eating certain foods for many years basically have a good idea what they’re doing and we can learn from that), try a small portion, see how your body/digestive system reacts, and proceed from there. Then try preparing in different ways and see what you come up with, and feel free to ask for suggestion/info/recommendations!

Paraphrased wise words by a nutritionist that I read and don’t remember where I read it or who said it, BUT it’s pretty smart info regarding eating seasonally in our part of the globe…
Spring… is all about detoxing (what we get from the CSA at this time is a lot of green things that are really good to help clean us out from whatever we accumulated during the winter)
Interesting piece about spring greens (out of the 14 listed, we get 12 of them with our CSA…watercress nutritionally and botanically similar to Peppercress) and detoxing…
Summer is all about being hydrated (the popular summer foods are all full of water…Tomatoes, Lettuces, Summer Squashes, etc.)
Fall/winter is all about storing energy (we get all the dense vegetables…Sweet Potatoes, Winter Squashes, etc…. that are energy powerhouses to fuel us through the winter) to get you through the winter to make it to…Spring!

Week #20
October 24, 2019

  1. Potatoes: Sweet* – ? – read CSA Wall Chart for details
  2. Mustard Greens** – 1 bunch
  3. Tomatoes, Mini*** – 1 pt.
  4. Lettuce – 1 head
  5. Peppers, Sweet**** - ? – read CSA Wall Chart for details

Total Items: 6

Herb Share – Oct 2B
Parsley***** AND Sage******

*Sweet Potatoes are one of the world’s healthiest foods (good info and recipes)!

**Mustard Greens are one of the world’s healthiest foods (good info and recipes)!

***Tomatoes are one of the world’s healthiest foods (good info and recipes)!

****Sweet Peppers (Bell or otherwise) are one of the world’s healthiest foods (good info and recipes)!

*****Parsley is one of the world’s healthiest foods (good info and recipes)!

******Sage is one of the world’s healthiest foods (good info and recipes)!

2.It’s that time of year to start thinking about voting (but it’s not what you think 😊 )

It’s the time of year to vote for the Best of Long Island sponsored by The Bethpage Federal Credit Union, and posted in The Long Island Press.

I missed the nominating time period (have to look into that for next year) so unfortunately, our farm isn’t nominated BUT am voting for Garden of Eve for best Farm Stand in lieu of that option since it’s certified organic for the longest period of time of the other ones listed (and most listed are not organic)…

AND voted for Cinema Arts Centre for best Movie Theater (as if I had a choice 😊 ).

You can vote once a day for each category from now till December 15th. And let me know if there’s anyone YOU feel strongly about that’s nominated (and why) and would be glad to share.

3.Turkeys anyone?

Thanksgiving isn’t so far away, and now is the time to make plans if you’d like a local/certified organic/heritage breed Turkey (sorry, but at the moment, seems like you can’t get all three in one bird). If you want a bird from 20 to 30 lbs., unless you’re getting a heritage breed bird, I’d recommend getting two 10 to 15 lb. ones (you can ask me why in person…you might not want to eat that big bird afterwards). Here are a few options…

A.Browder’s Birds – certified organic
You can reserve online with a $50 deposit fee and the birds must be picked up at their farm in Mattituck from Monday, November 25th, to Wednesday, November 27th

B.Makinajian Poultry Farm & Country Store – free range, no antibiotics, no hormones
Will start taking orders after November 1st. Size ranges from 10 to 30 lbs. Birds must be picked up at their farm in Huntington from Monday, November 25th, to Wednesday, November 27th between 9am to 6pm.
Give a call – 631-368-9320
Or stop by – 276 Cuba Hill Rd. (at intersection of Little Plains Rd.), Huntington
Tell them suzanne sent you 😊 !

C.Heritage Foods – humanely raised, pasture raised, heritage breeds, antibiotic free, not artificially inseminated
This Brooklyn based company has Turkeys available from Good Shephard Poultry Ranch (Kansas) delivered fresh to your home (so the birds aren’t local but the company is).

4.Click activism – you don’t have to do much, or spend any money, to help make a positive change in the world

A.Support human rights for farmworkers…

B.Share your food and farming priorities with Congress…
This Congress includes a new generation of leaders, bringing the promise of action for healthy communities and progress on climate change with them to Washington. It’s up to all of us to keep these goals front and center, holding Congress accountable to us. Can you take a moment today to let your Representative and Senators know you expect them to support a healthy, thriving food system?

C.Sign Farm Aid’s petition to assure that every school age child has access to local, farm-fresh food and that projects like school gardens are supported because farm-to-school rocks!

D.Make corporate polluters pay for the environmental damage they’ve done…

E.Is there child labor in your Chocolate? Ask Godiva to do more…

5.What you actually got last week

Week #19

  4. Tomatoes, Mini: Sungold**** – 1 pt. - $5.50
  5. Lettuce: Crisp, Red – 1 head - $3.50
  6. Peppers, Sweet: Yellow***** - 2 – $1.50

Total Items: 6
Total Amount: $21.25
(We pay $20 per week for our CSA share…some weeks we get a bit more, and it adds up over the course of the season. This week it was $1.25, and so far it’s a grand total of $32.25 which is more than one CSA share! We seem to always get at least one CSA share’s worth of food every year that we didn’t pay for…some years two, and some between one and two…it’s all good! 😊)

*Winter Squash are one of the world’s healthiest foods (good info and recipes)!

*Pak Choi (this is about Bok Choi…very similar so info will be the same) is one of the world’s healthiest foods (good info and recipes)!

***Snap Beans (another name for Green Beans and even though this week they’re Yellow, same basic info) are one of the world’s healthiest foods (good info and recipes)!

****Tomatoes are one of the world’s healthiest foods (good info and recipes)!

CSA Culinary Extravaganza! @ Thai USA, Huntington NY Wed., 10-30-2019

Greetings!

Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. wrote, “A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.”

Come join fellow CSA members for a new (and delicious) experience at the first CSA Culinary Extravaganza of the season (better late than never 😊 )!

This time we’ll be staying local (headed to NYC next time…more info on that TBA), and having a Bitter Melon 101 Session at Thai USA in Huntington.

What does that mean?

Everyone can order and pay for their own dishes, but we’ll all be treated to some extra Bitter Melon dishes to try (Bitter Melon stir fry with Egg…typical Thai style, Bitter Melon w/out Egg…if there are any vegans, Bitter Melon Soup…non-vegan). You can order Bitter Melon at Thai USA (though it’s not listed on the menu) BUT they don’t always have it. If they do, it’s only the stir-fry version (which you can order vegan style if that’s what you prefer).

Dishes enjoyed lately (besides Bitter Melon 😊 )…
Veggie Basil Rolls (with a Peanut/Hoison dipping sauce) – on the special menu
Vegetable Soup
Bao Buns (Pork Belly or Duck…have had both) – on the special menu
Gang Ped Puk  with Brown Rice (not on any menu but it’s mixed veg with a red curry sauce and usually get this one with Tofu but you can add any protein on the menu)
Alternate between House Salad and the Som Tum Salad (Green Papaya)
Haven’t eaten everything on the menu but have had a number of the dishes (maybe half?)

We’re up to 9 folks so far, and there’s room for more…

Huntington CSA Thursday, October 17, 2019 Week #19

Happy Autumn!

CSA weather report…chilly and WINDY (20 to 30mph with gusts up to 50mpg) *if there are power outages…bring a flashlight…the CSA will still be taking place!

The CSA will NOT be in the Sky Room Café this week but will be in the lobby area located near the upper parking lot staircase. From the upper parking lot, go down the stairs and at the bottom make a left turn down a pathway ad keep going till you get to the entrance of the building and you should see the CSA thru the glass sliding doors. The Sky Room Café will be closing around 4pm in case you have any plans on eating there (though they will have popcorn and snacky things available at the concession stand near the Box Office).

By this time you probably noticed we didn’t get Escarole last week. What we thought was Escarole (a red variety) turned out to be a Red Leaf Lettuce. Turns out there was a RARE lack of communication at the farm, and therefore with the CSA. What we got was switched up last minute after the list for us was made, and since the person at the farm who made the list didn’t know, either did we until I sent them a photo and finally got confirmation as to what it was. Sometimes what I email you will be different from what comes in from the farm but at that point, we know what the change was. This was a first in 20+ years.

  6. Cilantro and heavy metal
  7. Prizes!
  8. Get it while you can…

Week #19
October 17, 2019

  1. Squash, Winter* – ? – read CSA Wall Chart for details
  2. Pak Choi (see Bok Choi info)** – 1 bunch
  3. Beans, Snap*** – ? - read CSA Wall Chart for details
  4. Tomatoes, Mini**** – 1 pt.
  5. Lettuce – 1 head
  6. Peppers, Sweet***** - ? – read CSA Wall Chart for details

Total Items: 6

*Winter Squash are one of the world’s healthiest foods (good info and recipes)!

*Pak Choi (this is about Bok Choi…very similar so info will be the same) is one of the world’s healthiest foods (good info and recipes)!

***Snap Beans (another name for Green Beans and even though this week they’re Yellow, same basic info) are one of the world’s healthiest foods (good info and recipes)!

****Tomatoes are one of the world’s healthiest foods (good info and recipes)!

*****Sweet Peppers (Bell or otherwise) are one of the world’s healthiest foods (good info and recipes)!
http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=foodspice&dbid=50

Americans are eating more meat than ever, and US meat workers already suffer some of the highest rates of occupational injury and illness. Pretty much every other day a meat worker somewhere is sent to the hospital or loses a body part! Demand that the Trump administration stop allowing meat plants to increase line speeds that threaten worker safety…

If you want to read more about this situation…

Another thing to consider if you do eat meat is to know where your meat comes from, buy from a local butcher, and/or buy pasture raised/grass-fed/certified organic meat.

5.What you actually got last week

Week #18
October 10, 2019

  1. Beets: Chiogga, Red, White* – 1 bunch – $4.25
  2. Arugula – 1 bunch - $3.50
  3. Beans, Snap: Romano** – ¾ lb. bag - $3.25
  4. Tomatoes*** – up to 2 lbs. – $6.25
  5. Lettuce: Leaf, Red – 1 head - $3.50
  6. Bitter Melon**** - 1 - $2.00

Total Items: 6
Total Amount: $22.75
(We pay $20 per week for our CSA share…some weeks we get a bit more, and it adds up over the course of the season. This week it was $2.75, and so far it’s a grand total of $31 which is more than one CSA share! We seem to always get at least one CSA share’s worth of food every year that we didn’t pay for…some years two, and some between one and two…it’s all good! 😊)

Herb Share – October 1A
Cilantro***** AND Oregano******

*Beets are one of the world’s healthiest foods (good info and recipes)!
And so are Beet Greens (if we get them attached to the Beets)…

**Snap Beans (another name for Green Beans and even though this week they’re Yellow, same basic info) are one of the world’s healthiest foods (good info and recipes)!

***Tomatoes are one of the world’s healthiest foods (good info and recipes)!

****Bitter Melon has no Veg Info Sheet but you were sent a separate email with all the info (if you need it sent again…get in touch)

*****Cilantro is one of the world’s healthiest foods (good info and recipes)!

******Oregano is one of the world’s healthiest foods (good info and recipes)!

6.Cilantro and heavy metal

Not talking music, but the toxic heavy metals we get exposed to, or are in our bodies (like silver fillings). We got Cilantro in our CSA Herb Share last week, and I mentioned to a few people something I’ve been talking about for years, and then I got this email the other day…

Cilantro can help remove toxic heavy metals from the body (like mercury and lead) just by eating it!

7.Prizes!

Win a supply of Handsome Brook Farm Eggs, and a swag bag!

8.Get it while you can…

Climate change is going to be doing all sorts of challenging things for eaters and those who grow/harvest food. Some foods might need to be put in the category “get it while you can”. This might be one of them…

9.And now, for something completely different 😊

Watch young couple singing SEVEN HUNDRED chemicals used in food…or skip it and just buy and eat certified organic food 😊 …please feel free to share…
