Week #4 June 25, 2015

Happy Summer!

If you didn’t make it to the Annual CSA Farm Tour and Strawberry Picking event last weekend, sorry to tell you but you missed the last Strawberries of the season. They’re now gone at the CSA till next year (but 3 quarts out of 3 weeks is nothing to sneeze at, the most we ever get is 4 quarts in 4 weeks). However, let’s see if we have a dry enough summer to get Melons whenever they’re ready to show up! With every crop that’s gone for the season, there’s another tasty, interesting, wonderful, healthy food to take its place! 

This is the fourth week, of the 18th year, for Green Thumb CSA – Huntington, at our CSA’s new location at the Cinema Arts Centre’s Sky Room Café (423 Park Ave, Huntington)! It’s going to take a while for the CSA to get its bearings in the new space so please be patient. 

Anybody want an Herb Share? This week it’s Dill and Cilantro! If you’re interested, the cost is $55 from July to December. Let me know!

CSA Basics 101 –
Please read the Wall Chart that the farmer brings in every week, follow the direction on the Wall Chart, and it’s not a bad idea to refer to it before you leave the CSA to make sure you haven’t taken too much OR too little before you leave the CSA.
I can’t tell you how many times I have left the CSA, gotten home, and realized I THOUGHT I took everything in the share for the week, didn’t, and it’s too late to do anything about it as anything left over at the end of the night is donated and gone at 7:31pm (unless prior arrangements have been made by CSA members for late pickups).

CSA Parking suggestion…try parking all the way around the building in the upper parking lot where the day care center play area is. You hopefully will find a spot, and it’s a short walk down the stairs to the entrance from there, and most people don’t seem to think of parking up there. If you park illegally you can get a parking ticket, it does happen!

If you are going to show up at the CSA later than 7:30pm, but before the Box Office is closing for the night (may be different every week but will probably be open till at least 10pm) and it’s the last minute and you’re running late…call the Cinema Arts Centre Box Office at 631-423-7610 xt 0 and ask them to transfer the call to the café so we can pack a bag for you, put your name on it and leave it at the Box Office. If you don’t get to the Cinema before the Box Office closes, your food will NOT be there the next day. The Cinema is under no obligation to store your food, and we don’t want to be the cause of bugs being attracted to our wonderful CSA food.

Sky Room Café Deal of the Week…if you’re picking up your food and want a snack, this week the special is their Antipasto Salad with a 16 oz bottle of water…the salad is a mix of romaine lettuce and spring mix, topped with sweet red and green peppers, green queen & kalamata olives, cucumbers, tomatoes, mushrooms, and carrots. Sprinkled with a blend of premium mozzarella, asiago, romano, and parmesan cheese! $7.00 while supplies last.
New menu item…the Blue Note Burger - signature black bean veggie burger, topped with a rich crumbled Gorgonzola cheese, just a dash of creamy blue cheese, and a drizzle of buffalo style hot sauce, garnished with crisp romaine lettuce, spring mix and fresh cut vine tomato, on a toasted brioche bun for $5.00!

1.We bag our own

CSA basic, for this CSA anyways, is that you need to bring your own supply of bags for packing up your CSA share every week from now till December 10th!

So, my suggestion…put bags that you’re setting aside for your CSA share in EVERY vehicle you own or might ride in!  Put them in the trunk, or the glove compartment, or in a bigger bag somewhere in the car, or whatever you think will work for your situation. That way, you don’t even have to remember, they’re just there.

The CSA is under no obligation to provide you with bags for your food.

I also recommend a selection of canvas, paper and plastic. I bag my CSA share up in my paper (Strawberries) and plastic bags (most everything else) and put it in my bigger canvas bag so when I get home, everything’s pretty much (with some exceptions…like herbs) ready to be put right into the fridge.

2.The CSA is looking for ONE (1) person from 5:30pm to 7:30pm to work at the CSA today…

If you’re available, please..

1. Respond to this email from now till 1pm, Thursday, June 18th
2. Call 631-421-4864 from now till 1pm, Thursday, June 18th
3. Call the Cinema Box Office at 631-423-7610 xt 0 from 2:30pm to 5:30pm and make sure we get the message that you’re coming to work and when
4. Just stop by the CSA a little before 3:30pm and 5:30pm and see if we still need help.
5. Will be getting back to whoever responds about 1pm in the order of who contacted me first

If you didn’t already get an email from Hayley or/and suzanne talking to you about being at the CSA on the Early Shift (3:30pm to 5:30pm) or the Late Shift (5:30pm to 7:30pm) this week, you’re not on the schedule for this week.

You can always show up a little before 3:30pm or 5:30pm and offer to help out just in case someone doesn’t show up (stuff happens  ).

3.This week’s list…occasionally subject to change without prior notice because farming is like that!

CSA #101 – The Basics – when trying any new food item, start small and start slow. See how your body and palate reacts. And if you aren’t crazy about the taste, texture, smell, something…try at least SIX completely different ways of preparing it before you give it the heave-ho (raw, steamed, stir-fried, fried …maybe not so healthy but ANYTHING usually tastes good fried, in a salad, in a soup, in a sandwich, in a stew, in a smoothie, and on and on)!  Am glad to provide suggestions for this one.

5.Black Turtle Beans and Lavender redux…

Black Turtle Beans…
Beans stored properly for 30 years were ok (notice I did say properly  )…

And the new thing is there’s no reason to pre-soak Beans other than to cut down cooking time…

Lavender…
CSA member Sharon Levy submitted this recipe which she may or may not have tried (I don’t think we had enough for a cup of Lavender but I would probably try it with what we had and checked it out anyway)…it’s from the movie “It’s Complicated”…

7.Produce Wrangler and Veggie Counselor

In addition to being the CSA founder, organizer, and matchmaker, I’m also a Produce Wrangler and Veggie Counselor!  Please feel free to ask me/contact me about ANYTHING to do with ANYTHING you get at the CSA! I’m happy to share my knowledge about cooking, food storage, etc. and if I don’t know, I’m happy to keep on learning so we can both find out. Oh yeah, and my basic cooking style is lazy working class gourmet (few ingredients, not a lot of time, good results). I’m a fan of the Working Class Foodie videos, and I steal their credo…local, seasonal and affordable…

Happy Spring!

This is the third week, of the 18th year, for Green Thumb CSA – Huntington, at our CSA’s new location at the Cinema Arts Centre’s Sky Room Café (423 Park Ave, Huntington)! It’s going to take a while for the CSA to get its bearings in the new space so please be patient. 

***The CSA is going to be OUTSIDE this week!!! Told you this is all an adjustment to a new space! We will either be in front of the Café in the garden, OR if it looks like rain (which it might or might not by the morning and we may do this just in case it might) we will be in the alcove that’s located between the Cinema garden and the stairs to the upper parking lot (told you to park there anyway  ). If you can’t find it, ask at the Box Office and they’ll tell you where we are. There are 3 other CSA days where we’ll be outside (the 3rd Thursdays in Sept/Oct/Nov) and let’s all think good thoughts for pleasant weather on those days. 

CSA Parking suggestion…try parking all the way around the building in the upper parking lot where the day care center play area is. 5. News from the Farm

June 11, 2015

Summer is almost here and our crops are growing well. Strawberries are here but only for a couple more weeks, so enjoy them while they’re here. Peas have begun - Sugar Snaps, followed by Snow Peas and then Shelling Peas. We’ve been picking Spring Onions and Scallions and will have them for several more weeks. Swiss Chard and Beets will be the next to arrive. Lettuces are doing well and we now have many varieties that we are picking. Herbs of all sorts are still coming in as well - Oregano, Chives, Savory, Dill, Cilantro, Mint, Curly Cress, Lavender flowers, and maybe some others. Most can be dried for future use.

Saturday, June 20th, our Annual CSA Farm Tour and Strawberry picking will happen - a walking tour at the field - meet on corner of Rose Hill Road at Montauk Highway in Water Mill. Tours begin at 10:30am, 11:30am, 12:30pm & 1:30pm. No charge for tour and everybody (tour is restricted to CSA members and immediate family only) gets to pick 1 Quart of Strawberries. For more info, call 631-726-1900, between 9:30am and 4pm. Hope all get a chance to come visit our farm. Our next CSA farm tour after this will be in October.

So enjoy our seasonal, fresh, local certified organic produce, because the season never seems to last long enough!

Organically yours,
Farmer Bill (Halsey)

Dress for sun exposure and wear closed toe shoes that are appropriate for walking in dirt and mud. CSA member Lenore Hanson’s mother-in-law, B Hanson (also a long time CSA member), is the subject of this documentary directed by Emmy Award winning director Ron Rudaitis. B Hanson will be here for a Q & A after the film. I’ll be there…will you? 

From pre-Civil Rights Alabama to Rodgers and Hammerstein-era Broadway to present-day suburban Long Island, this whimsical and heartwarming documentary tells the story of the life, career and indomitable spirit of a truly inspiring American voice. Join B (Beverly Fite) Hanson on an emotional and revelatory journey back to Alabama in search of the real story of her father's disbarment and ultimately the meaning of her own life's journey.

A.CSA member Gail Payne is concerned that women and children aren’t protected by current radiation exposure regulations (and that nuclear power is a “privileged pollutant” according to the EPA, meaning that much higher rates of cancer are allowed than for other known toxins) and wanted to share this with us. Eat healthy, exercise, and then get exposed to unhealthy amounts of radiation because of the government that we voted for and pay taxes to? I don’t think so! 

Week #2 June 11, 2015

Happy Spring!

This is the second week, of the 18th year, for Green Thumb CSA – Huntington, at our CSA’s new location at the Cinema Arts Centre’s Sky Room Café (423 Park Ave, Huntington)! It’s going to take a while for the CSA to get its bearings in the new space so please be patient. 

Strawberry Picking CSA Farm Tour coming up at our farm (Green Thumb Farm) in Water Mill on Saturday, June 20th (read #5 and #6 for details).

Parking suggestion…try parking all the way around the building in the upper parking lot where the day care center play area is.

Sky Room Café Deal of the Week…if you’re picking up your food and want a snack, this week the special is a Tomato & Mozarella Bruschetta plus a 16 oz bottle of water for $4.00 (while supplies last), plus they have a new Fiesta Salad. It’s a mix of romaine lettuce and spring mix, topped with spanish rice, salsa, black beans, jalapenos, cucumbers, tomatoes, and carrots. Sprinkled with tortilla strips and cheddar cheese and paired with a creamy ranch dressing for $8.

8.And now for something completely different…

2. The CSA doesn’t need you this week (but I know we will  )

We’re talking about working at the CSA.

If you didn’t already get an email from Hayley or/and suzanne talking to you about being at the CSA on the Early Shift (3:30pm to 5:30pm) or the Late Shift (5:30pm to 7:30pm) this week, you’re not on the schedule for this week.

HOWEVER, you can always show up a little before 3:30pm or 5:30pm and offer to help out just in case someone doesn’t show up (stuff happens  ).

And, for some reason EVERYONE wants to work on June 18th so I’ll tell y’all right now that only 6 people are needed, so you’ll get an email from Hayley, our CSA work coordinator, to let you know if you’re on the schedule (if you don’t get an email, you’re not).

3.This week’s list…occasionally subject to change without prior notice because farming is like that!

June 11, 2015
Week #2

1.Strawberries
2.Lettuce
3.Asparagus
4.Rhubarb
5.Beans, Black Turtle: Dried (take the Beans out of the pods…I found out last year that not everyone knows this)

Total Items: 5

Flower Share – Week #1 (?)

Herb Share – June 1A
???

4.Veggie Info Sheets

The attachments to this email are your Veggie Info Sheets. You’ll be getting them every week, and if you print them out and put them in a notebook (and put in plastic sleeves if you want to keep them clean), you’ll have a CSA cookbook by the end of the CSA season!

5. News from the Farm

This is the start of our 20th CSA season (20 years in NYC). The years seem to go by so fast. As the season begins, we would like to welcome back all of our returning CSA members who’ve supported our local, seasonal, certified organic, family farm though the years, and also welcome all our new first time members as well…A MOST GRATEFUL AND JOYOUS WELCOME TO YOU ALL!!!

As June begins, in the first few weeks we will have Strawberries, Rhubarb, Onions, Lettuces and herbs (many of our herbs, especially Oregano, Thyme, Savory and Mint can be dried or frozen as well as used fresh).

We’ll have several types of Peas (Sugar Snap, Chinese flat pod aka Snow, and shelling) ripening by the middle of the month. Our farm is seasonal, so enjoy each vegetable, herb and fruit while it’s here, because it’s only here for a short time, and then the next ones arrive…Snap Beans, Summer Squash, Tomatoes, Beets, Carrots, Broccolis, and all sorts of other crops.

Welcome to your Green Thumb Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program for another year!!!

Our Strawberry Picking CSA Farm Tour is a walking tour, and will be held on Saturday, June 20th. We’ll be meeting in the field on Rose Hill Road near the corner of Montauk Highway. The tour times are 10:30am, 11:30am, 12:30pm and 1:30pm. For more info you can call the farm at 631-726-1900 between 9:30am and 4:30pm. This tour is for CSA members and their immediate family members only! If CSA members are sharing with someone often one person visits the farm in June, and the other will visit in October when we go Pumpkin picking.

Organically yours,
Farmer Bill (Halsey)

CSA - What you actually got LAST week in the 1st CSA Pickup

Greetings!

Please put in your 2 hours at the CSA (we have till December 10th so we need people from now till then) and consider working the 12 hours as it helps the CSA be a better CSA (and is what helps these “mysteries” from happening)!

Something a CSA member pointed out to me is that we had some youngsters grabbing food and getting it for their folks. We LOVE having children at the CSA and being active participants (really  ), but they do need to be supervised as it’s happened in the past that a little one will grab something, put it in their parent’s bag, and it’s not discovered till they get home that they have someone else’s food. And who has the time to have to deal with getting it to the rightful owner?

CSA Basics 101 – Please read the Wall Chart that the farmer brings in every week, follow the direction on the Wall Chart, and it’s not a bad idea to refer to it before you leave the CSA to make sure you haven’t taken too much OR too little before you leave the CSA.

The Veggie Info Sheet attached to this email is one we didn’t get last week, because we ended up with Spinach instead of the Scallions (on the list of food I thought we were getting last week…the list is subject to occasional change without prior notice  ).

This email includes…

1. What you actually got last week
2. Easy CSA Salad Idea
3. And now for something completely different…

1.What you actually got last week

June 4, 2015

Week #1

1.Jerusalem Artichokes (Sunchokes) – 2/3 lb - $4.00
2.Spinach – ½ lb - $3.00
3.Oregano – 1 bunch - $2.75
4.Lettuce: Oakleaf, Green – 1 head - $2.75
5. Strawberries – 1 qt - $6.50

Total Items: 5
Total Amount: $19.00
It has begun! We pay $18.50 per week for the food the farmer is giving us, and this week he’s given us $.50 more than we paid for. Doesn’t sound like much but see how every little bit extra he gives us adds up over the course of 28 weeks!

2.Easy CSA Salad Idea

First time CSA member Sharon Levy very pleased with her first CSA salad creation…

Lettuce, Green Oak Leaf (CSA)
Jerusalem Artichokes (CSA)
Strawberries (CSA)
Walnuts (not sure where they’re grown)
Goat Cheese (we theoretically could have a Cheese Share)…would also substitute Gorgonzola or Blue Cheese
Sunflower Seeds (not sure where they’d come from either but not grown around here)

Dressing…
Fresh squeezed Lemon Juice (not able to be easily grown in NY  )
Black Pepper, freshly ground (see above)

3.And now for something completely different…

Submitted by CSA member Bettina Barbier…you too can make 2,000 year old bread at home! 

Week #1 June 4, 2015 'FIRST CSA Pickup for 2015!'

Happy Spring!

This is the first week, of the 18th year, for Green Thumb CSA – Huntington, at our CSA’s new location at the Cinema Arts Centre’s Sky Room Café (423 Park Ave, Huntington)!

It’s going to take a while for the CSA to get its bearings in the new space so please be patient. Green Thumb CSA – Huntington – is about to begin please Join NOW!!

Happy Spring!

At Green Thumb CSA – Huntington, we’re all ready to start eating local certified organic vegetables, herbs and fruits, and smelling our local certified organic flowers, and hope that you’ll want to join us! The time to join is now as the CSA begins June 4th!!!

Please use the CONTACT US (below-right side) to request info about our CSA, and CSAs in general. After you’ve read everything over completely, you’ll have a good idea about how this CSA works, and the general CSA philosophy and process. If you don’t see the email in your “Inbox”, please check your junk/spam folder as it might end up there because of all the attachments. However, if you didn’t get it, please let me know (email AND a phone call are a safer bet) and we’ll figure out how to go from there.

Sorry it’s taken so long to get back to you this season but it’s been a unique year in our CSA’s 18 year history. It was an extreme winter for every farmer on Long Island for this reason, our normal starting date at the end of April was moved forward to the beginning of June. We also just received our contract information.

Another unexpected surprise, at the very last minute, we’ve moved our CSA pickup location to the Cinema Arts Centre, 423 Park Ave, Huntington, after being at the same location for 16 years. We couldn’t send out the contracts to everyone until the CSA location was finalized and that’s just happened.

Also new this season, if you are a current member of the Cinema Arts Centre (or join the Cinema before you join the CSA), as a perk of Cinema membership, you will get a $50 discount on your Work Deposit Fee! So, instead of it being $100, you’d pay $50 for the Work Deposit…and instead of getting back $100 if you work for 12 hours, you’d get back $50. That means your check that you make out to “Green Thumb CSA – Huntington” would be for $75 ($25 – yearly Adminstrative Fee + $50 – discounted Work Deposit = $75).

I started Green Thumb CSA - Huntington 17 years ago because I was tired of going to the health food store and purchasing Lettuce, Bananas and a loaf of bread, and it seemed like that alone was costing me almost $20! After trying to grow my own food, visiting farm stands and farmers markets, and being a co-op member, I’ve found this CSA to be the best way for me to get a good selection of reasonably priced, local, certified FRESH organic produce.

If after you look this information over and know that the CSA is something you want to do, contact me so I’ll put your name on the member list AND let me know what date you want to start picking up your CSA share.

If you want to make an appointment to tour the CSA before joining, please make an appointment. At the end of your visit, you’ll be given a free sample from the CSA share for that week.

Thanks for your interest in CSA!
