Happy Autumn (it’s not winter till December 21st)!

Last day of the CSA for 2013 is next week, December 12th. Info about 2014 CSA season TBA.

The short story is that there’s some loose ends concerning the CSA so will be in touch to square away all outstanding CSA paperwork issues, etc, between this weekend and before the new year begins.

Am going old school this week and next week with the CSA emails (sent to one member with the others BCC’d) because it was too inconvenient last week to not know who did and did not receive the CSA email. Next year it looks like the CSA will be using Mail Chimp to send out the CSA emails.

Exciting news from CSA member Marissa Waller! She’s launched her website www.BeauTeaBar.com and they sell the most luxurious and effective non-toxic skin care products and makeup available! There’s a discount code for people placing first time orders. The code is “MYFIRSTTIME” and that gives the purchaser 10% off of their purchase.! You can also “like” their Facebook page at…
https://www.facebook.com/BeauTeaBar You go girl!!! 

This email includes…

1. Your CSA does not need you this week, however…
2. Make a donation by eating a sandwich!
3. Got kids (any kind…little ones or adult)? Interested in holistic parenting/grandparenting and living and/or learning about living a healthy lifestyle?
4. This week’s list (subject to change without notice…farming is like that!)
5. Help young local farmers (and young farmers around the world) learn…
6. Click here to help make the world a better place…
7. What Dr. Andrew Weil has to say about Winter Squash!
8. Help save a New York farm if you’re of a mind to!
9. Event Listings
10. And click here too!
11. What you actually got last week
12. And now for something completely different…

1. Your CSA does not need you this week, however…

You can ALWAYS stop by the CSA a little before 3:30 or 5:30 to offer to help in case someone doesn’t show up (or is late) without letting anyone know…life happens! 

If you didn’t get a confirmation email from Judi (occasionally it’s me), you’re not scheduled to work this week.

2. Make a donation by eating a sandwich!

If you’re in NYC this holiday season…checking out the holiday store windows, the ginormous tree in Rockefeller Center, or just enjoying the many sights and sounds New York City has to offer…consider checking out the eatery called Num Pang (opened in 2009). Besides the fact that they’re just good, from now till the end of December if you order the Gramercy Tavern Pang (a duck meatloaf sandwich topped with spicy Kim Chee…made in-house), out of the $9.50 you pay for the sandwich, $6 will be donated to Unicef and God’s Love We Deliver!

If you’re not a meat eater…not to worry. They have numerous selections for vegetarians too (have had the Spicy Tofu Sandwich, Roasted Cauliflower Sandwich, Japanese Yam Sandwich, Lentil Soup, Grilled Corn on the Cob, the side of Roasted Vegetables and the Hot Ginger Apple Cider which has so much Ginger in it, it will cure whatever may ail you…all good and there’s more I look forward to try from the non-meat selections!)

They now have FIVE locations…not all locations have all the food options (I think the NOMAD site has the largest menu)…
Chelsea Market (75 9th Ave between 15th and 16th Sts)
Grand Central (140 E 41st St between Lexington and 3rd Ave)
NOMAD (1129 Broadway between 25th and 26th Sts)
Times Square (148 W 48th between 6th and 7th Ave)
Union Square (21 E 12th St between University Pl and 5th Ave)…the original location…you have to go up a spiral staircase and eat at a counter space or kiddie chairs (I’ve done it but prefer the NOMAD location…haven’t been to the other locations…yet  )

General info…
http://www.numpangnyc.com/

Read this before you go…not all locations have a place to sit inside the eatery (but most have options nearby like at Chelsea Market you can sit outside Num Pang on a bench or at a table in the hallway of the Market…been there, done that…not at Num Pang but some other eatery at Chelsea Market)…

3. Got kids (any kind…little ones or adult)? Interested in holistic parenting/grandparenting and living and/or learning about living a healthy lifestyle?

CSA member Vickie Muller started the Huntington Chapter of the Holistic Mom’s Network (HMN) just over two years ago. Huntington HMN is in search of an enthusiastic and passionate co-leader to work together with Vickie to fulfill our vision and inspire others about holistic living.

Holistic Mom’s is a widely recognized and respected non-profit organization as a resource link for helping parents to find support and information on natural health, wellness, and informed holistic parenting.

We are looking forward to continue to grow with fresh new ideas. If you think you are interested or know someone else who might be please reply to this email and you’ll be put in touch with Vickie to get more info.

5. Help young local farmers (and young farmers around the world) learn…

From now till December 27th, 2013, you have the chance to help fund a series of videos produced as part of Cornell University’s Northeast Beginning Farmers Project. The goal is $15,000 and they’ve raised about $3,000 so far.

This project has helped thousands of new and aspiring farmers (not just in NY or the northeast, but around the world!) get started, by providing trainings and connections to the resources they need to develop strong farm businesses. Being able to hear advice from real farmers–and seeing how things are produced on the farm–is priceless both for these new farmers and for any eater interested in how food is produced. The Northeast Beginning Farmer Project started producing videos in 2008, starting with a series called “Voices of Experience,” which provides farm business advice from successful small farmers, and “Video Mentors,” which shows behind-the-scenes production techniques for vegetables, fruits, poultry, pigs, and more. They’ve made these clips freely available on their YouTube channel. Funding to allow these videos to continue to be made, and continue to bring much needed information to help beginning farmer’s flourish is needed.

7. What Dr. Andrew Weil has to say about Winter Squash!

This one includes a recipe…

8. Help save a New York farm if you’re of a mind to!

Tamarack Hollow Farm is a vendor at the Union Square Greenmarket. Why should you care about them?

We need all the local farms that exist, and then some. So, we can’t afford to lose any (and there are some that fall through the cracks every year).

They want to move to higher ground so they don’t get flooded. They’re in a flood plain (bad for the excess water but creates some mighty good soil for growing food) and have had three floods in three years on their twelve acre spread, with the most recent one being this past summer. With climate change making all bets off on how the weather is going to behave from year to year, hey want to move to a 20 acre parcel in Plainfield, Vermont, have a Kickstarter campaign going to raise $25,000, they have three days left, and while they’re made their goal, the more the merrier! They’re accepting all donations from $1 (thank you email and a mention on their website) to $5,000 (they’ll throw you a pig roast for 100 people…could work for a wedding or just a heck of a party…and someone bought one and there’s only one of these left). And there are options all along the spectrum in between.

Spread the word if you know anyone who might help out. I’m sure every dollar makes a difference!

If you can't make it...
Public comments on the proposed rule will be accepted through December 23, 2013 and should be sent to Leslie Surprenant, NYS DEC, Invasive Species Coordination Unit, 625 Broadway, Floor 5, Albany, NY 12233 or email invasivesregs@gw.dec.state.ny.us.
