Happy Autumn/Halloween/Samhain/Dia de Muertos/Hallowmas!

And better late than never, happy Farm to School month!
http://www.farmtoschoolmonth.org/

Weather report for CSA…nice and warm and dry (till later tonight)!

MYSTERIES!!!
A. Somehow, the Lettuce was counted (twice) before the CSA and was correct, but at the end of the night there were 2 heads of Lettuce missing. So, two people didn’t get their Lettuce and since the count was correct at the start of the day, our farmer is under no obligation to replace the missing Lettuce and those folks missed out on the amazing Lettuce we had last week. Any clues/info on this one? Did anyone by chance leave their Broccoli Rabe (we had EXTRA Broccoli Rabe at the end of the night which makes this option look possible) and take extra Lettuce (this could happen if someone is picking up for a CSA member and thinks you can do substitutions)? You’d think someone working at the CSA would have seen an extra one of those honkin’ big heads of Lettuce walk out of the CSA but that’s why it’s a CSA best practice to have someone at every set of tables to make sure errors like this don’t happen (and if there is, it’s a LOT less likely to happen). However, we don’t have enough CSA members or people willing/able to work so it’s not the case this year. Nevertheless, it’s no excuse for it to happen.

B. Did anyone by chance take an extra Arugula as we were short one of those too?

C. There was an Herb Share missing at the end of the night (one Rosemary and one Marjoram). They were counted before anyone got to the CSA (there are only 7 of them) so did anyone take the Herb Share who didn’t pay for one? The person who paid for this Herb Share didn’t get it and again…it wasn’t the farm’s fault so they aren’t responsible for replacing it or paying for the loss, so who is? Me? Again, any clues/info?

Anybody make it out to the farm the other weekend for the CSA tour? If so, and you’d like to share, please email any comments and photos!

Organic Tomato Sauce or Sun Dried Tomatoes anyone? Our farm is offering us 20 lb boxes of their own certified organic Red Italian Plum/Roma/Paste (all the same thing) Tomatoes for $45.00 per box if you’re interested in making your own canned Tomatoes or Tomato Sauce OR (if you have a dehydrator) making your own Sun Dried Tomatoes. To place an order, call the farm (631-726-1900) any day from 9 am to 5pm, but no later than noon on Wednesday for a Thursday delivery. Payment is to be made by credit card so have your credit card ready when you make the call.

10. What you actually got last week
11. Win stuff
12. And now for something completely different…

1. Your CSA does not need you this week, however…

You can ALWAYS stop by the CSA a little before 3:30 or 5:30 to offer to help in case someone doesn’t show up (or is late) without letting anyone know…life happens! 

If you didn’t get a confirmation email from Judi (occasionally it’s me), you’re not scheduled to work this week.

2. It’s time to weigh!!!

A. Check the wall chart before taking any food so you know what you’re taking and how much to take…assume nothing and please ask questions! 

B. Bring your reading glasses or ask someone to help if you can’t see the numbers on the scale clearly.

C. PLEASE DO NOT GO OVER THE AMOUNT STATED on the Wall Chart. Please err on the under side of the weight posted…NEVER over. It may not seem like much to you but we have 56 members and if every person is off by ONE OUNCE (for crying out loud! It’s only an ounce!!!) …that means we’ll be short almost THREE AND A HALF POUNDS of produce and 3 CSA members won’t get the food they paid for. And I’m sure you wouldn’t want it to be you.

D. IF you are asked to weigh more than one food item at the same time…please follow the directions given to you and weigh in the order you are asked (you might not think there’s a good reason to be doing this but our farmer does and that should be enough of a reason right there…if you want a further explanation – ask suzanne…there is a method to the madness )

3. News from the Farm

October 18, 2013

Mid-October is here. Our summer crops are still doing well! Still picking Tomatoes, Summer Squashes, Peppers and Beans. All will be done, mostly by the end of the month.

We harvested our Sweet Potatoes but it’s a smaller cop then we expected due to the colder than usual summer…especially August. Sweet Potatoes thrive on heat.

Winter Squashes have been harvested and are in our barn for storage to be distributed over the remainder of the year.

Our Greens are coming on strong due to the mild weather of the last six weeks – Broccoli Rabe, Tat Soi, Pak Choi, Arugula, Swiss Chard and others, all to be brought in over the next weeks.

Carrots and Scallions are doing well, as is our selection of Turnips…Golden Globe, Japanese Red, Purple Top White, as well as Rutabagas.

Our cole crops – Cabbages, Broccolis, and Cauliflowers are very limited this year due mainly to deer damage.

So still lots of produce left to bring in. This is the best time of year…fall plus summer crops all at once!

Organically yours,
Farmer Bill (Halsey)

5. The Purple Elephant wants to grow!

Spread the word if you know anyone that might be interested in getting in on this!

Contribute money…get stuff…from $5 for a glass of wine (good chance it’s organic and/or biodynamic), to $1,000 for a private dinner for two cooked in your home by Chef David. A decent deal is the $150 gift certificate for $100. If you don’t have to use it in one shot (I’m thinking not), it has to be used in 6 months and that should be no problem if you’re a regular…or even a semi-regular  !
