Happy Autumn!

Weather report…Nice!

Also, Happy Organic Harvest Month and Hunger Action Month!

Our Annual Pumping Picking Hay Riding CSA Farm Tour is Saturday, October 19th! See Event Listings for details.

Next CSA meeting is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, October 26st from 10:30am to noon (waiting for confirmation from the Cinema Arts Centre). The main topic will be…What exactly is meant by organic food, and why is it important to be certified organic (or is it?). Also, we’ll be starting to talk about next year.

Organic Tomato Sauce or Sun Dried Tomatoes anyone? Our farm is offering us 20 lb boxes of their own certified organic Red Italian Plum/Roma/Paste (all the same thing) Tomatoes for $45.00 per box if you’re interested in making your own canned Tomatoes or Tomato Sauce OR (if you have a dehydrator) making your own Sun Dried Tomatoes. To place an order, call the farm (631-726-1900) any day from 9 am to 5pm, but no later than noon on Wednesday for a Thursday delivery. Payment is to be made by credit card so have your credit card ready when you make the call.

Anybody want to be a farmer (or know anyone who does)? There’s a 3 bedroom ranch house for sale in Port Jefferson that has 2 acres of land (full basement and huge landscaped yard), 2 greenhouses with irrigation and heating systems, a warehouse and a kitchen with a walk-in fridge, PLUS an existing farm stand that’s now being rented by David Peach Farm. The property has been owned by three generations of the same family. The realtor is Rose Pinto of Realty Connect USA. It’s on the market for $575,000. You only need to be farming organic on non-organic certified land for 3 years to get organic certification (my guess is that they weren’t farming organically).

This email includes…

1. Your CSA does not need you this week, however…
2. It’s time to weigh!!!
3 Mushrooms anybody????
4. This week’s list (subject to change without notice…farming is like that!)
5. News from the Farm
6. It’s Hunger Action Month so consider feeding the Hungry Basket

9. Click here to help change the world!
10. What you actually got last week
11. Sell by/Use by/Best by dates on foods…what do they really mean?
12. And now for something completely different…

1. Your CSA does not need you this week, however…

You can ALWAYS stop by the CSA a little before 3:30 or 5:30 to offer to help in case someone doesn’t show up (or is late) without letting anyone know…life happens! 

If you didn’t get a confirmation email from Judi (occasionally it’s me), you’re not scheduled to work this week.

2. It’s time to weigh!!!

A. Check the wall chart before taking any food so you know what you’re taking and how much to take…assume nothing and please ask questions! 

B. Bring your reading glasses or ask someone to help if you can’t see the numbers on the scale clearly.

C. PLEASE DO NOT GO OVER THE AMOUNT STATED on the Wall Chart. Please err on the under side of the weight posted…NEVER over. It may not seem like much to you but we have 56 members and if every person is off by ONE OUNCE (for crying out loud! It’s only an ounce!!!) …that means we’ll be short almost THREE AND A HALF POUNDS of produce and 3 CSA members won’t get the food they paid for. And I’m sure you wouldn’t want it to be you.

D. IF you are asked to weigh more than one food item at the same time…please follow the directions given to you and weigh in the order you are asked (you might not think there’s a good reason to be doing this but our farmer does and that should be enough of a reason right there…if you want a further explanation – ask suzanne…there is a method to the madness )

3. Mushrooms (or more Mushrooms) anybody???

We have a few people waiting and hoping that they’ll be able to get Mushrooms before the end of the season which is Halloween, October 31st. We need enough people to commit to 4 lbs more to get that 3rd five pound box.

People don’t have to be CSA members to get Mushrooms so ask anyone you know who might be interested and have them get in touch OR let you know.

If you’re interested…ask! If the only thing that’s stopping you is that you share with someone and they don’t want what you want…ask! I bet I could find someone for you to share with (or at least I’d try  ). If you have a share and want more than your one share…ask!

Anybody interested in the Mushroom Share who hasn’t spoken up yet? Let me know!  We’re starting another waiting list for a 3rd five pound box. Anyone who HAS a Mushroom Share…want to upgrade your share to get more Mushrooms? Just a thought! 

5. News from the Farm

Mid September 2013

September is half over and our summer crops are beginning to wind down, and fall crops are starting. Winter Squashes (mostly Acorn and Butternut), Oriental greens (Mizuna, Tat Soi and Pac Chois), Broccoli and Cabbages and Winter Radishes. Turnips are still a couple of weeks away. We expect to dig our Sweet Potatoes next week so expect those in early October.

Beans, Tomatoes and Peppers still have several more weeks of harvest, and plenty of Beets, Carrots, and Leeks till the year ends. Lettuces will continue for a couple of more months.

Our CSA Fall Farm Tour and Pumpkin Picking will be Saturday, October 19th. More info about that in the next newsletter.

Organically yours,
Farmer Bill (Halsey)

6. It’s Hunger Action Month so consider feeding the Hungry Basket…

Including today, there are 2 more Thursdays in the month of September so we CSA members can easily participate in Hunger Action Month by feeding the Hungry Basket!

What’s the Hungry Basket? It’s the plastic storage bin that you pass every week on the way in to the CSA that you may or may not notice. Bring a non-perishable food item, and consider making it an organic or natural one. Ex – Organic Tomato Sauce from Trader Joes, Organic Pasta from Trader Joes, Organic canned Beans…you get the idea (you don’t have to spend a lot of money to eat organic)! 

Annual Pumpkin Picking Hay Riding CSA Farm Tour!

To make your reservation (and you can probably call as late as 9am on the 19th before you left to go out east BUT it would be best if you called ASAP to assure your spot):

Then we’ll be selecting, as opposed to literally picking, Pumpkins that are not grown on our farm and are not organic. They don’t grow this variety of Pumpkin as it’s not a better eating variety however, they are edible.

This farm tour is for current CSA members and immediate family only. So, if you are sharing with someone you need to decide who’s going and make the reservation in the name of the CSA member (the person whose name is on the sign-in sheet). YOU MUST MAKE A RESERVATION TO ATTEND. I haven’t gotten all the info yet from the farm but the times available are usually 10am, 11am, noon and 1pm.

Happy Summer (it’s still summer till September 22nd)!

Weather report…Nice.

Also, Happy Organic Harvest Month and Hunger Action Month!

Next CSA meeting will be Saturday, September 21st from 10:30am to noon. IS ANYBODY COMING??? Please let me know so I can plan accordingly. The main topic will be…What exactly is meant by organic food, and why is it important to be certified organic.

Question…do any of you folks know where there are organic (preferably certified) Apple orchards to pick Apples in New York? I found out that the Rodale Institute in PA has an event this weekend (see listings below).

This email includes…

1. Help! Your CSA needs you this week! We’re looking for ONE (1) person to help out from 5:30pm to 7:30pm!!!
2. It’s time to weigh!!!
3 Mushrooms anybody????
4. This week’s list (subject to change without notice…farming is like that!)
5. How about sharing recipes?
6. It’s Hunger Action Month so consider feeding the Hungry Basket
7. Register NOW for the NY Locavore Challenge!
8. Event Listings
9. Do you eat chicken? Then you seriously need to read this…
10. What you actually got last week
11. CSAs can be for more than things to eat and drink!
12. And now for something completely different…

1. Help! Your CSA needs you this week! We’re looking for ONE (1) person to help out from 5:30pm to 7:30pm!!!

If you can work this week from 5:30pm to 7:30pm, please…
A. respond to this email before 1pm Thursday
B. call 631-421-4864 before 1pm Thursday
C. call 631-385-1079 after 3pm Thursday
D. show up a little before 5:30pm Thursday

And if you got an email from Judi asking you to confirm that you’re working…you need to respond to that in the time frame stated in the email otherwise she’s going to try and find someone else to take your place.

We need enough people to commit to 4 ¼ lbs more to get that 3rd five pound box.

5. How about sharing recipes?

Submit recipes by email, or in a form where they can be an attachment to an email, or if you’re feeling motivated, bring 60 copies for each CSA member.

9. Do you eat chicken? Then you seriously need to read this…

This may either get you to eat locally raised and killed chickens (if you don’t already), or stop eating them altogether (if you don’t already  )…
http://www.salon.com/2013/09/16/chicken_is_killing_the_planet/singleton/

After reading the article above, I had to read this one…
http://www.pressherald.com/news/Turner-egg-farm-employee-killed-by-co-worker.html?pagenum=1
Why are they killing “stray” chickens? Don’t they want to kill and sell them?

It started in Minnesota four years ago, and now it’s in NY (Brooklyn, of course)! Maybe some Huntington/Long Island artists could start one.

Happy Summer (it’s still summer till September 22nd)!

Also, Happy Organic Harvest Month!

REMINDER…Thursday is the first day of the Jewish holidays (L’shanah tovah y’all!  ). If you can’t come to the CSA because of the holidays this week…1) see if you can make arrangements for someone else to pick up for you or 2) let me know and I’ll see if another CSA member can pick up for you and hold your food till you can pick it up.

Next CSA meeting will be Saturday, September 21st from 10:30am to noon. The main topic will be…What exactly is meant by organic food, and why is it important to be certified organic.

This email includes…

1. Help! Your CSA needs you this week! We’re looking for TWO (2) people to help out from 3:30pm to 5:30pm, and ONE (1) person to help out from 5:30pm to 7:30pm…
2. It’s time to weigh!!!
3. You can still get in on the Herb Shares and Mushroom Shares!
4. This week’s list (subject to change without notice…farming is like that!)
5. North Fork Foodie Tour coming up!
6. Three reasons to eat Sweet Bell Peppers…
7. Register NOW for the NY Locavore Challenge!
8. Event Listings
9. Buy raffle tickets by Thursday, September 5th for AMAZING raw foods/raw lifestyle raffle!
10. What you actually got last week
11. Roasted Cantaloupe and more!
12. And now for something completely different…

1. Help! Your CSA needs you this week! We’re looking for ONE (1) person to help out from 3:30pm to 5:30pm and ONE (1) person to help out from 5:30pm to 7:30pm…

If you can work this week from 3:30 to 5:30pm or from 5:30pm to 7:30pm OR from 3:30pm to 7:30pm, please…
A. respond to this email before 1pm Thursday
B. call 631-421-4864 before 1pm Thursday
C. call 631-385-1079 after 3pm Thursday
D. show up a little before 3:30pm or 5:30pm Thursday

And if you got an email from Judi asking you to confirm that you’re working…you need to respond to that in the time frame stated in the email otherwise she’s going to try and find someone else to take your place.

2. It’s time to weigh…

3. You can still get in on the Herb Shares and Mushroom Shares!

4. This week’s list (subject to change without notice…farming is like that!)

5. North Fork Foodie Tour coming up!

It’s happening on Sunday, September 8th (see below under Sept 8th for more info). I’ve got my ticket…do you? Went last year and it was great! It seems a little less ambitious but even this year it would be a challenge to visit all the farms, etc, that are offered…
http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/366859

There will be tours of Catapano Goat Farm (I want to pet a goat…and eat cheese), Shinn Estate Vineyard (been there…best vineyard on Long Island), Satur Farms (I’ll be at this tour), Sang Lee Farms (been here…great people and farm), Koppert Cress (wouldn’t miss this for the world…they have Spilanthes [they’re calling it Sechuan Buttons]!!! Won’t tell you what it is, and my experience with it, unless you go  ), and MORE!
