“Maximize Nourishment, Feel Great...with year-round kitchen gardening!” Lean how to achieve food independence and eat more healthful, raw foods, at a fraction of the cost!

Join us for a gourmet, entirely plant based lunch at Green Melody Asian, Vegetarian Restaurant in Jericho with speaker Steve Meyrowitz, The Sproutman!

Best selling author of Wheatgrass Nature's Finest Medicine and Sprouts the Miracle Food demonstrates how simple it is to add living foods to our diet anytime of the year. Find out how to incorporate supercharged micro-greens into your everyday diet and save thousands of dollars per year on your food bill! And you'll get the science and nutrition behind these amazing foods that give them their impressive healing potential for cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and more. Enjoy many of the benefits of having a backyard garden, but in the kitchen instead and soil-free. No green thumb required.

Steve Meyerowitz was christened "Sproutman" in the 1970s because his apartment was always filled with gardens of mini-vegetables-- part of his lifetime fight against chronic allergies and asthma. After 20 years of disappointment with orthodox medicine, in just two months he became symptom-free through his use of diet, juices, and fasting. In 1980, he founded "The Sprout House", a "no-cooking" school in NYC teaching the benefits of a living foods diet. Steve is a health crusader and author of 10 books including his latest, "The Organic Food Guide: How to Shop Smarter and Eat Healthier." He has been featured on PBS, the Home Shopping Network, TV Food Network, and in Better Nutrition, Prevention, Organic Gardening and more.

This event is co-sponsored by Slow Food – Huntington which was started by CSA member Ann Rathkopf, and this film series is co-curated by suzanne j zoubeck, also a CSA member.
What's On Your Plate? follows two eleven-year-old kids as they explore their place in the food chain. With the camera as their companion, Sadie and Safiyah talk to food activists, farmers, storekeepers and families. The girls address questions regarding the origin of the food they eat, how it’s cultivated, how many miles it travels from the harvest to their plate, who prepares it, and what is done afterwards with the packaging and leftovers. They visit supermarkets, fast food chains, and school lunchrooms. But they also check into sustainable food system practices by going to farms, greenmarkets, and community-supported agriculture programs. They discover that these programs both help farmers to survive and provide affordable, locally-grown food to communities, especially to lower-income urban families. In What’s On Your Plate?, the two friends formulate sophisticated and compassionate opinions on the state of their society, and by doing so inspire hope and active engagement in others.
Following the screening of What’s on your Plate, Bhavani Jaroff, of iEat Green LLC, will be giving a “Kid Friendly” hands-on cooking workshop. In this workshop, we will all have the opportunity to make our own delicious snacks- from Nori Rolls (vegetarian sushi rolls) and Hummus, to salads and dips. Come on down for an afternoon that is sure to inspire kids in the kitchen and put a healthier spin on snack food. Bhavani Jaroff has been a natural foods chef for over 30 years and specializes in cooking for people with special dietary needs. She is responsible for the Waldorf CafĂ©, where she started a holistic lunch program for the school. She currently teaches cooking at The Viking Cooking School in Garden City and is available for private lessons in your home or hers. Check out her website… http://ieatgreen.com/

Happy New Year!

I took this past month off from CSAness and this week, will begin settling up last year’s business, and start up for this season. The 2010 contracts will go out the beginning of February for current members, and will go out the beginning of March to everyone else.

There were 10 orders for Dines Farm last time which was good, but I send this email out to almost 200 email addresses. Where is everyone? Have you all turned vegetarian??? Just teasing, but the more orders placed, the less likely Dines will stop making the trip to Huntington this winter. If not you, spread the word and with it, the following article…
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/04/health/04meat.html
If you haven’t read it, it’s a must read for anyone who eats meat, or not. It certainly sealed the deal on why I want to know where my food is coming from, and meat in particular.

If you’re a vegan/vegetarian, consider emailing this email to your meat-eating friends & family.

If you do eat meat, read on, and also consider forwarding this to potentially interested friends and family to support our other local farmer at the CSA, Jay Dines of Dines Farm.

If you’ve never seen it, or it’s been a while, here’s the NY Times article about their Hot Dogs…
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/05/dining/05dog.html

The 2nd winter delivery from Dines Farm is this Thursday, January 21st. You must pre-order as they don’t plan on transporting all the meat they do during the CSA season (though they may well have a few things…like Eggs, Hot Dogs, Ground Beef and probably something chickeny …if you stop by and haven’t ordered in advance).

Pickup is in the parking lot in front of the UUFH from 4pm to 7pm. Larry will be in his van (and Jay too this week!) and I’m sure he’d appreciate if you could pick up your order ASAP  .

You’re more than welcome to stop by and just say hi as I know Larry & Jay would enjoy seeing you all.

The remaining planned delivery dates for this winter are…
February 4th & 18th
March 4th & 18th
April 1st (no fooling!) & 15th

TO PRE-ORDER FROM DINES FARM…

Please email your order by 12pm, noon, Tuesday, January 19th.. Allow more time for special requests.
